Hello all, went down to Walmart yesterday and was impressed by 0w40 oil prices, $22.97. Now I am totally happy with the Liqui Moly 5W40 I have been using on my car. Doesn't really burn oil or smoke. But I did have a broken oil filler cap on my car since the last 2 years and lost like 0.7 quarts of oil every year. I barely noticed a couple weeks back after seeing moist engine over right by the oil filler cap so ordered a new oil filler cap and all is good. But my mechanic told me last time that if I use 0w40 on my car, it will "burn like water" and said 0w40 is only good when the car has less miles and is new. IS it true? The prices of 0w40 are unbeatable and I am really tempted to pick up Castrol 0w40 which I believe also has a rebate offer. So are 5w40 and 0w40 that different and will it burn? Plus will the car run less smooth from thinner oil? Please educate me more on the two viscosity.

I just put the Castrol 0W40 in my M112, even if I need to add a quart after 7-8000 miles it is still cheaper than Liqui-Moly which I have been using as well.
Also, your Castrol Edge will be free with 2 movie tickets per 5 quart rebate which they process very fast (I got mine after 3-4 days from submission).

Agreed... I will pick it up in a week... Also how does the car run compared to Liqui Moly? Is it as smooth? Btw How to use rebate? Just take a pic of receipt and sent it to castrol? Thx

Engine is still smooth with the Castrol as it is also a good and approved MB oil 229.3/229.5.
I would suggest to order the oil online for store pick up so you have a full order details. If you buy it in store, the receipt will not say Castrol Edge on it (just the bar code numbers) and the rebate requires the full product name be shown on the receipt.

When I ordered online it was $26/jug but when I went to pick it up in store they adjusted the price down to $22 to match the lower store price.

You submit the rebate info online (a pdf of your online order is fine).

MY SL500 is closing on 200,000 miles and oil pressure on hot engine drops drastically (yes, the car has real oil pressure gauge).
I have it on 0W40 at the moment and think about thicker oil, but don't plan to go higher than 10W40.
The weather finally dropped to double digits this week.

Great, I want to try this oil now on my car. Though I have only driven the car 4500 miles on Liqui moly oil, its been exactly a year... I guess it can drive it another 5-600 miles before changing it but I will buy the oil and keep it before the deal expires. Thanks and let us know if it burns quicker and how the smoothness holds up as the oil gets old.

Engines are not supposed to burn oil. If an engine starts burning oil like water just because you switched from 5w to 0w then you have much bigger problems then the oil viscosity.

Also the 0w-40 and the 5w-40 have the same viscosity at operating temperature so there should not be any burning of the oil at operating temp between the two oils. The only difference is the viscosity at a cold temperature such as cold start up conditions. So no your engine should not be using more oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 0w-40 in my E55. I originally bought it because it was the cheapest oil at Walmart. I did the oil change at 119,000 miles in December 2016 and I filled it to 1/2 on the dipstick. I now have 126,000 miles on the car I have not seen any significant difference in the oil level, it's still at 1/2. That's my experience so far. I have only had thr car since October 2016 so I can't really give any info on longevity between the 0w and the 5w. I think for the next oil change I will go with Castrol since it's the same price as the Mobil 1 and it has good rebates.

Yeah I wonder why my mechanic said that? Anyways I will pick up 0W40 in about a week...BTW the Castrol website says that with each Castrol EDGE there will be 2 free movie tickets... so will I get a total for 4 free tickets? Are they AMC?

Yes, I mentioned in my previous thread that the Edge oil gets 2 tickets for the Fast & Furious 8 movie, so in reality you are getting more value in tickets than the actual cost of the oil.

My 2001 uses no oil between 10k mile changes with Mobil 1 0W40 and it has over 190k miles on it.
My 2002 uses about 1 qt. between 10k mile changes with Mobil 1 0W40 and it has over 160k miles on it.

I attribute the usage on the 2002 to valve cover leaks. If the usage increases I'll consider fixing those.

Both cars have used Mobil 1 0W40 since I have owned them (100k plus on each) so I don't think any usage could be due to the oil type.

I have a minor valve cover leak, when I was using Mobil1 0W40 in the past sometimes I may need to add 1/2 qt or so around 8-9000 miles but when I switched to Liqui Moly 5W40 I never needed to add any oil even at 10k miles. I will see if I need to add any oil with the Castrol 0W40 similar to the Mobil.

As another member previously pointed out, 5w40 and 0w40 have the same viscosity at operating temperature (that's the 40 part of the number). Any 0w40, 5w40, 15w40 or even just straight 40 weight oil will have the same viscosity at operating temperature. What changes is viscosity on cold startup, 0w is less viscous than 5w in the cold. But how much less is less viscous? Well, 0 weight oil in the cold is still lots thicker than 40 weight oil at operating temperature, so you will not damage anything that's a promise. Actually, it's much better to have the 0w oil, because the oil reaches everything faster on cold startup. This is particularly important for us in the north. Running 15w40 oil during winter would kill your engine guaranteed.

As for oil pressure, with a fully warmed up engine it should drop to about 1 bar / 1.5bar at idle in drive (since drive idle is slightly lower than park idle). If it stays pegged at 3, I'd first consider a bad gauge, then I would worry about oil viscosities and whatever. Likewise if your gauge drops to 0 at idle, I would also first suspect a bad gauge. There is no way a 40 weight oil actually drops to zero oil pressure, even at operating temperature, not with such tight engine tolerances. If you are running a 20 weight oil than maybe (and probably if you do any track racing), but then again, you shouldn't be using 20 weight oil in a mercedes. Oil pressure should shoot past 3 bar very quickly, even with slight increase in RPM. It probably maxes out at around 6-7 bar (which is way past the factory gauge limits anyway).

Yea, mine " Burns it like water" in a mater of week or two of mixed driving after a new oil change, so I can relate. Mine is brown cinnamon look to the oil, 0-40 stuff is too thin on start-up in my case. I bet if we had a gauge I'd be below "one" on the gauge.

Me too. I will try 5w40 with the next oil change. For South FL climate, I see no reason to stick to 0w40 at all. Maybe I could go up to 10w40.

You need to find a new mechanic.
He does Liqui Moly oil changes for me and tops off a quart of tranny fluid every year for $75...go figure. He has all 5 star reviews on yelp and is a Mercedes/Euro car specialist... charges me very less labor as he is my friend and does a lot of complimentary things like car washes with any service. I would not go to anyone else but him.

Anyways, talking about oil, my car really doesn't smoke anytime or burn oil. But I would be going to 0W40 because of the great deal at Walmart... though I will see how my car goes with 0W40, hopefully it doesn't start burning oil.
