Later this week I am planning to pick up a set of 20" S65 gunmetal look-a-like rims. After checking DT's tire size calculator, it looks like I can run either:

245/35/20 or 255/35/20

without serious calibration issues on the speedo. I have been doing some research over the weekend and it looks like either will fit – however, I read a few threads claiming that 255s were too wide as they encroach on 10"... any insight on which size would fit and/or fit better?

Thanks in advance!

I would go with 245's non staggered.
I know you didn't ask this but I'll tell you what my opinion is on this subject.
I really think the 20's will be too much and I have been looking at some cars with 20's and they just don't look right to me.
I am in the market as well for some new wheels and I was thinking absolute largest for me would be 19's and I like the 18's better as far as look on my car. My original setup is 225/60/16 and that may be the reason I am not getting used to seeing it with a setup over 19's.
At the end, it is all preference.

"245/35/20 or 255/35/20"

I did both sizes and neither rubbed at all. If you decide to lower the vehicle to close the gap between tire and wheel well you'll start to have occasional issues. I started with the 245s and moved to 255s to soften the ride a bit and give a little more sidewall. Aesthetically, I couldn't tell the difference but I could feel the extra rubber. I say go 255 all around. If you stagger them it complicates rotations and you'll spend more in the long run. Welcome to the 20" club.

You won't have any fitment issues with those , you'll just spend a little more when it's time to rotate since everything's not interchangeable. Post pics when you get them on there.:D

I have a 2001 s430 and i put 18's on it and there is no rub either, my fronts are 245/40/18 and rears are 275/40/18. The rims are staggered or as they sat offset frt 18x8.5 rears 18x9.5 the fit well and look great. The rims i put on were off a 2006 cls 500, i have 2 sets, my 2nd set are chrome, so i'm trying to get rid of my first set of 18's they are the identical wheels.

Got the rims on Friday, I was told they were second hand but ended up with two new rims and two second hand for the same price. (one rim even had a newish Michellin Pilot Sport on it) No complaints there.

After talking to a couple of tire places and seeing what sizes were available, I ended up debating between the yokohama s.drive, goodyear eagle f1, continental extreme contact dws, and nitto nt555 extreme performance. I decided on running the Nitto's because of the better reviews on DT's website. I'm going to call DT tomorrow morning and see if they can get in 245/35/20 (front) and 275/30/20 (rear) in for me tomorrow afternoon.

Will post pics upon installation!
