Noticed the aux fan was running, but it was cold outside and the engine wasn't even heated up yet, why would it do that in winter?

Check your climate controller sensor values.

Item #20 in the list will identify if the fan operation is initiated by the controller or not. If so, check item #6 ECT to see if the value is available and plausible (reflects the coolant temp gauge on the instrument cluster). If the fan op. is not initiated by the controller, you may have a bad fan regulator, power/grounding issue of the regulator (check loose ground connections at the driver's side).
