Had a little "race" yesterday on the freeway with a S 600 Coupe. From 120 - 210 km/h i beat him with a couple of car-lenghts. Is the S so much more heavy than the SL ? The 600 got lots of more power....

I think its the same thing , he has the same power and i think the same weight if not lighter , depends what year the more luxurious stuff they put in the s class the heavier they get . It also depends if you were shifting from 1.2.3.4, and he was just in D .So i am sure you guy have the same power to weight ratio. All the electronics for are hard top and soft top weights so much .

Actually, I think he has more power and more weight. Typically, the 600 has about 80HP more than the 500. And i would think that the S class is a heavier car, but I am not to familiar with the specs of the S600.

O i didn't notice he has a 500. Ok well 80 hp my make a diffrence but not much when you are driving a 2ton car. lol . My sl weights more then my silverado.Any ways maybe the guy had some fat chicks in the car , lets say driver 189 pound male .

driver :189
pass1:235
pass2:250
pass3"281 = 925 pounds , each 100 pounds make a .1 sec diffrence which in this case is a about a full second . 1seconds = 1-2 car lengths:p .

The S600 coupe is around 40+ HPs more than your car (but heavier) so I wouldn't be suprised to see you "whipped" it.

It was a rolling start, and both took kickdown at about 120 km/h
When we where at about 210 km/h, I had him with about 2 car lenghts. In other words, not much, but I had him :)

From my point of view, it looks like that 600 was only bagged 600, but not one really,
the 600 has alot more power than a 500, still even if its is overweighted,
..
but..
Only that guy know's the truth,

cheers

Found an article on the Mercedes Enthusiast January 2006 Issue 51 about the C140 Coupes and the 600SEC / S600 / CL600 - yes, the C140 Coupe had all those model names.

The article specifies the 0-62mph (100km/h) as 6.6 seconds for the 6 liter V12. The weight is specified the same as what Msbarsi mentioned, 2,240kg.

Interestingly, the specs for the CL500 C140 (5 liter V8 M119 1996 - 1998) are specified as 316BHP, 2,080kg, and 0-62mph (100km/h) 7.5 seconds. So anyway you look at it, it was much heavier than the R129, by some 200 - 300 kg, depending on the model.

Also a 4.2 liter M119 V8 was available from 1994, which was the cheapest C140 version offering 275bhp and 0-62mph 8.5 seconds. The weight was the identical 2,080kg as with the CL500.

The car was produced from 1992 to 1998 and never sold well as opposed to the predecessor C126 SEC Coupe, or the successor C215 Coupe. Tranny development was similar to the R129, first the 4-speed hydraulic 722.3 and later the 5-speed electronically controlled 722.6.

Hi people I got all the figures stated from the program I use here at work (I'm an insurance professional) and the data come from the database of the most important car magazine here in Italy that has been around for over 50 years so they almost tested everything with 4 wheels so the data should be as accurate as possible at least for the Italian market.
Yes the W140 coupe is way heavier that our R129s so it's pretty normal in my humble opinion that an SL 500 can keep a CL600 (W140) behind as I stated in a previous post.

Cheers.

I've been driving a 99 S500 Coupe for the past couple of days and it's not even in the same league as my 500SL. It reminds me of driving a Mark VIII, it's a big boat with medium balls.
