Calling the Mog collective !

While waiting on my hub fiasco to be resolved I decided to start working on a winch configuration.... I was poking around the Hellgeth site a noticed the Rotzler winches they've been installing on trucks. These were similar to what I had on my MAN 8x8 and I like the front or rear routing capability.

What I've got are two 20K hydraulic units. The first is a traditional front mounted unit, that would easily fit on the back. I picked up a new Eaton hydraulic motor to power it.

The second is a side mount DP from either an FMTV or HEMTT, that's got multiple mounting options due to it's construction.

What are your opinions ??? I'm only going to mount one so the other will go up for sale...

Cheers !

If I was you I would either mount the red one in the front (my personal choice) or, install the DP midship and run calbe options either to the front or to the back or even sideways.

Mid mounted winches

Hi Roberto,

I think I've seen some photos of your truck with the winch installed near the rear axle.
I might be wrong, but if I'm not, could you post some pics of it?
Hola Yarr, here are some pictures.

On the 416 you will notice a mid-mounted Hydraulic Winch which is exactly the very same model as the one installed on the 1450.
On the 1450 you can only notice the rear fairlead, the winch itself is hidden under the bed and you cannot see it unless you look under the bed.

I have a HEMTT crane on my Autocar truck, but don't care for the winch. The drum is too narrow and high which will give you the cable length allowance, but will be quite a few rows high. As we know, each row has reduced pulling power and high stacking of cable is just asking for crushing of rows below when used hard. A broader drum with fewer layers to get the length you need always works better.

Side mounted winch

Not sure about this side mounted winch, but the ones you can find on older imported Mogs had a different purpose. They were installed for Mogs working on steep European vineyards and meadows in order to prevent them from tipping over when working along the slope. In that case long cable length, but very little weight to hold. There the narrow drum made sense.

My Vote : Red One, mounted high in the rear. It would even out the weight distribution, and would be ready to pull you out the way you came in, away from even deeper trouble...you might
be able to rig a way to feed the cable out the front as well.

Thats a well equipped 416. Was it imported w/ winches or owner modified? That is a beautiful truck and must be over $10K in winches alone.

The truck is a bit front heavy right now, I'd have great front/rear access if the PTO tranny wasn't in the way. I don't use it but it looks to be a major job to remove it !

All interesting ideas !! I was poking around again and couldn't find any clear shot through the frame for a cable... so I was thinking of sort of a compromise : a high rear mount of the HEMTT winch. Then I could use the axle mounted 3 point bracket to mount a sheave to send the cable forward. While the narrow drum has it's disadvantages it would be ideal in this situation as it's centered over the bracket.

Pro's , con's ???

Only thing that comes to mind with the sheave idea: on a strong pull wouldn't the winch tend to compress the rear suspension somewhat? Is there anyway that could put you at a disadvantage while winching, or be dangerous? Just food for thought.

... then there's this.. the frame that held the shaft for the snowblower drive that could be cleaned up and modified with some fashion of cable routing. It also has a couple of places that facilitate mounting for a sprag. It would slightly reduce breakover clearance and frame flex ???

Having thought about it, while grilling some ribs and drinking beer discussing this with friends, our main concern: On a pull where you're stationary, pulling something else the rear of the mog might squat and unload the front wheels. Depending on the situation, and every one is different, maybe dangerous to lose that traction. Extricating yourself from being stuck, if you were unstable to begin with, loading the rear suspension might not be your ace in the hole. Maybe it could change your center of gravity enough for things to get ugly. A real variable is, what is the winches primary use? Construction, self recovery, salvage, etc. I'm sure if you understood the possible limitations and were cautious, it would be a good setup for most things. Most winch event boo boos seem to be a result of poor planning and/or safety measures from what I've seen.
