I belive I drove all MB diesels available in US in last 25 years. :D
Each generation gives more power and better eficiency. Roughly I can compare
Year ..... engine...... HP...... mpg in sedan
1980.......300td........112.........25
1995.......2.5td.........120.........30
1997........300d.........144........32
1998........300td.......174.........36
2005.......320cdi.......201.........40
You add prices and draw your own conclusions.
All above are bulletproof engines. Only 1986-7 had some issues with aluminum heads.

I added more above when you've been typing. Never have heard about bent rod on MB, unless somebody added turbo to engine not designed for it.
The mentioned aluminum heads and 350 diesels are the only having slightly worse opinions, but otherwise all are million plus miles engines.
Krafcik? what that means?

Krafcik = last name

btw - this is a secondary car.

based on your experience with them - if you were to buy only 1 to enjoy - which would it be?

Right now I drive mostly F450, since I am building new structure 100 feet away from my old one. I had 2005 E320cdi for a year, but couldn't justify keeping expensive vehicle in the carport for 29 days a month. Still keep the 98 E300td, what is good value for low mileage we drive.
Than E320cdi dropping below $20k are really tempting and as soon as I will need another car this is what I will buy. My only dream would be get that engine in wagon.
Krafcik wouldn't be Polish?

I'm really considering an 80's 300d - any thoughts on those?

Non turbo? I hope you have lot of time to get to your destination?
That is like 86 HP?
Still excellent choice, just not for hilly CA.
Let me rephrase it.
Excellent choice if you don't care about ABS airbags and other gadgets.

300 is bigger brother of the 240, that Thessaloniki cabbie was driving for 2,400,000 miles.
Whats the mileage on the car now?
Have you been to Prague? I loved the historical district.

200 k means nothing on them if they are well maintained.
If you can afford go for 98-99 E300td. Those are much more comfortable and much safer cars giving the money back in fuel savings. You can find them in your price range.

BTW I was buying MB diesels in Texas an Louisiana very cheap.
The main reason was that those states don't have good and affordable mechanics for those models.
Hope you are good DIY ?

Funny that I am buying cars in Texas, flying there from California and you do opposite?
I might have logic explanation for it. As I said -Texas lack good MB mechanics and once the warranty on them expire -the prices drop like crazy and the cars are sold to other states.
In California industrial neighborhood you can find 3 MB mechanics in 2 blocks and with people appreciating them the 20-30 years old models, quite often in pristine condition are normal thing on the streets.
I will check the car for you if you find one in my neighborhood. I am in East Bay, we have few members on SF Peninsula.

Actually, the OM603 used in some W140's (S350 in the 1990's) are known for bent rods. It is a very serious problem and stats with heavy oil consumption. MB had an improved version (stronger rods), IIRC.
