Only use benz oil A 001 989 26 03 10 if you use any product castrol or mobile etc hard gear shifting will be experienced when cold

Hi Xfiles
Someone must make oil for MB, they may like you to think that it is specifically formulated for them but who knows. It's not unknown for main dealers to use different oils than specified by the manufacturer. An Audi dealer in Finchley once told me that HSBC (the lease company of my then company car) would not pay for 'Audi oil' which is why an alternatve brand appeared on the invoice.
The current MB recomendation is probably different to the oil recomended whem the vehicle was new anyway.
If you trust the dealer go with thier recomendation.
Let us know how you get on.

Sorry for the delay. The following oils are suitable according to the WIS for Gearbox G32:

Gear Oil MB 317 by Exxon Mobil
MB 235.10 Schaltgetriebeöl A 001 989 2603 by Mercedes Benz.

It states that these are SAE 75W/85W oils so your friend might be right. Gearbox oils contain additives such as phosphorous and sulphur compound which allow the oil to lubricate between the teeth of mating gears even when highly loaded (so call EP or 'Extreme Pressure' gear oils). Its possible that they contain other additives like corrosion inhibitors, etc. Just a thought?

Cheers

Adam.
