Peformance: 190E
Economy: 190D
Longevity: 190D
Maintenance: Toss Up, each has its own foibles
Resale Value: Slight edge to the 190D

A 5-speed 2.5 turbo would be uber-rare.[8D]

Owned an '86 190E 2.3L but drove my parents' '85 190D 2.2L for a bit. All thoughts of the diesel's mileage and longevity went out the window when attempting to merge on the highway with 18-wheelers bearing down on you.

I guess you haven't seen the AMG CDI diesel. [:D][:D][:D]

Lexus, at the Geneva Show this year will be showing their first diesel powered sport coupe.

Actually I have, but I honestly feel that Diesel & AMG should not be in the same sentence.

And what's this fascination with Lexus,... IT'S A TOYOTA!!! We get toyota landcruisers & soarers here with the same spec as the LX470 & SC430, and we love them just as much,... why try to polish a turd?

I disagree!
• Diesel engines have far more torque than gas engines.
• Diesel engines get nearly double the fuel economy
• The newer Diesels are just as quiet as gas engines.
• The newer Diesels are light weight and not nearly as bulky as before.

If this was a full size truck discussing gas vs diesel, the diesel would win every time!

Were not talking about a truck are we? and i do not believe that diesel gets twice as much gas mileage(your saying the diesel gets 60mpg i think not)

Well, for a car of this age, I'd definitely go with the 190E, because all of the benefits of the newer deisels obviously don't apply to these older engines.

Plus that fact that deisel is $2.60+ a gallon these days, while gas is $2.00. Even accounting for better economy with deisel, you can't really run biodeisel in these things without a bunch of mods, so that nixes the only other benefit of deisels.

Besides all that, gas engines are quieter, and 2.6L sounds sexier than 2.5L -- bigger is better w00t [:D]

At Geneva, Mercedes showed a diesel SL, SLK and CLK, all with top speeds limited at 155 mph, but delivering 30-40 mpg. The SLK is fitted with an AMG bodykit and is triple turbocharged. [:D]

There's no particular facination with Lexus, unless you happen to like cars with a better build quality than the recent E-Class' from DC.
