I have to replace the front left upper control arm because the ball joint boot is torn. Rock auto has a whole array of brands. From experience can anyone tell me their successes or failures with different brands. I usually go with dealer parts but if anyone has a strong opinion I would like to hear it.

I believe the one you have was made by ZF Lemförder, so that's what you should replace this major suspension component with.

Lemforder

Is this control arm available only through the dealer?
I will only purchase from a genuine source.
If you know another source, that would be great.
Thanks for the response.

I know, but the right one is $8 cheaper.

I try not to make it too easy for them. By searching for the left one, the OP will learn how to find a part for himself, and compare brands & prices.
Let them learn by installing it. Dont make them learn by ordering the wrong part or side and then not being able to install it, and get the ML back on the road.

You're right, and I answered your questions without insulting your intelligence.

We all get really frustrated helping people who won't answer our questions. You can read what goes on here.
