Let's keep working on the GL450.

There is no warning message yet, but when applying brake and when the truck is moving slowly, a weak high pitch sound can be heard from rear. maybe this is a sign of needing new brake pads? The GL450 has 51k miles on it and have not got new set of brake pads.

Searched online and found some tutorials and videos on replacing the brake pads and rotors, so far I got the following points:
1. better to replace the rotor together with the pads
2. it's not difficult to replace them

now the questions are:
1. what brand/type (websites) rotor and brake pads do you use/recommend?
2. some people mentioned that OEM stock pads is more efficient in braking than Akebono pads. although OEM stock pads produce more dusts and are dirtier. is that true? Akebono seems a good brand, I've used them before for other cars, and they perform well.

Thanks a lot.

1. I would not agree. You should be able to get 100k from the rotors.
2. Basic brake job.

1. I went with ceramic pads.
2. Yes, that is true. They do not have the bite of the OEM pads but the lack of brake dust makes it worthwhile for me. You will notice that you have to step on the brakes a little harder but it you will get used to it quickly.

I don't know whether it is better to replace the rotors as much as that they are so cheap that it isn't that much more to just replace them rather than sending the old ones to be turned. But as long as they are still in spec the old ones should be just as good as new.

Personally I use the OEM pads. I tried a couple of different brands but squeaking and squealing issues always eventually popped up and were a pain to eliminate. OEM pads were always quiet.

I have done both replace the rotors and gotten them machined. The cost to machine is 15 versus 30 to 70. I would go with a ceramic brake pad as you will get longer life and in my opinion better stopping power. Typically I just get them from Oreillys as I have one down the road from my house and haven't had a bad experience with them. If you are not getting the same or better stopping power you should check the last time you changed your brave fluid as MB says to change every 40k miles

I have 185,000 miles on my 08 and am still on my original rear rotors. I replaced my front rotors and all 4 pads at 85,000 miles for the first time. I used Rotax Gold pads and I just checked them last month and they still have many miles to go. Also they were advertised as dustless and the truly are!
