I have never owned a Mercedes and I am thinking of buying my 1st Benz soon. I am wanting to buy a new 2003 Model. Because of business travel,I will be driving it only on Sundays a couple of weeks out of the month. My question is for under 90k, historically, which would have the best resale value in two years if it had very low mileage at the time of resale or trade in? Coupe,Cabriolet, or Sedan? I have no preference for one over the other and I have no children....Any input would be appreciated....

Upper-end Mercedes-Benzes tend to hold their value better than lower-end examples regardless of whether it's a coupe or sedan. The S-Class, G-Class, SL and CL are the answer if you can afford them initially. Mass models like the C-Class, M-Class and E-Class depreciate very quickly. However, lower-end examples like the CLK and SLK depreciate slower because they are a coupe and roadster, respectively. I bought a 2003 E320 in August for $49,800. In one month I sold it for $44,800 - the best I could get from ANY dealer. My advice is do not buy the C/E/M-Class because there is so much out there that there is not enough demand.

Interesting

It is interesting what 190E2.6 comments about the US market. In Australia the expensive models tend to depreciate quickly unless they are fairly exclusive (eg. SL or AMG versions). S-Class sedans don't hold there value here whereas C-Class do. Generally coupes hold their value better than sedans and cabriolets or roadsters hold it better still. Obviously it depends on the market in your location.

Try this

For a comparison, the site will display lease residuals for a 2 year term.... it says the CL and CLK hold up best.

If you don't care som much which Mercedes you will be driving, find the cheapest one that you are happy with, and it will for sure be the cheapest to own in the end.

I don't know about the US market, but at least in Germany the more expensive Mercedes loose more value, also when counting in %. Equipment seems to be more important than engine size. When I was looking for an E-class, I noticed that a absolutely fully equipped E320 (designo leather, Command/navi, seat fans etc) were more expensive than a more standard equipped E430 with the same year, milage and new list price.

Even more important for the re-sell value is when a new model comes out the old one drops in price really quickly. For this reason, the E-class, SL or CLK will hold is value better in lets say in 3 years compared to the S-class and CL which will be replaced in a couple of years.

On the other hand you might have to pay listprice for the newer models, but for the S-class you might be able to negotiate the price. In germany you can buy the old E-class (W210) T-model 20% of list-price, and maybe there is even still a margin for negotiating.
