Hello all, my first post! I am looking for a running W124 sedan or wagon in northwest Washington for $1000-$3000, I have been lurking Craigslist and eBay Motors for about a month now with little success, is there a better way to find them online? I'm not picky as far as mileage, model, year, options, or color but I would prefer one with maintenance/ownership history and a non-4matic. Thanks! :D

I sold my 95 e320 Wagon on craigslist last month for $1500.00 in really good condition (Bainbridge Island). where you are I doubt you will find anything you will have to come closer to Seattle there are many for sale. I personally would not bother with a 300E unless it was really really clean. an E320 can be had for same price range and now of days most of them have had the wire harness and head gasket done as mine did. Personally I think 93-95 are the best W124 out there save for the rare, oddball and AMG stuff. Although I've had several 300E I think the later cars are loads better. Maintenance with the Sohc verses the Dohc is kind of a toss up.

I guess if I could find a 94-95 W124 that would be preferable however I would really settle for any year, I've been searching craigslist all the way down to northern California and east to Idaho and I've found a number of them but they always seem to have something wrong and that cost of repair is what's making them sell.

Off the top of my head I know of a low-mile (120k) 1993 in mint condition but needs a new clutch pack and owner doesn't know if head gasket has been replaced. $1800 obo

Another is a 1994 E320 4matic that needs a new heater fan or something and has about 200k miles with no long term maintenance records. $2000 obo

Being "obo" I would assume there may be some wiggle room but I'm worried about the cost of the repairs...

:D Thank you, that's very tempting, sedan or wagon? any other info? It would be nice to find one locally but if it were nice enough or a good enough deal then I would consider transporting it cross country, thanks

Sedan, champagne exterior and interior, new camshaft two years ago--common problem--two sets of wheel and tires, everything works great. Interior is in excellent shape, exterior has some oxidation even though it has been garaged all life--has about 160k miles.

I have an outstanding 89 300ce 2 door coupe. $4k and I doubt there is a nicer one. I really like this car. In a thriving economy it would bring $7 to 8K any day of the week. I searched for 9 months until this one came up. PM if you have interest in coupe.

That sounds like a pretty amazing deal but my daily has been a two-door for a long time now and I was really hoping for a larger four-door. But then again it's very tempting deal, what part of the country are you in?

300E

I would consider selling my 1989 300E sometime in the future. Looking to buy another 2011 vehicle first. Mine is white with about 110,000 miles. I bought it in 1988 as a 3rd car. I am located near Sacramento, Ca. Very clean, garaged and no accidents!

I am still checking craigslist/ebay everyday and I've found some promising ones but I have a question about the 400E/E420, I recently found a '94 E420 with 120k, records, in mint condition, etc. What are these worth? what's the differences between the 300's? higher maintenance? worse mpg? any things I should look out for? thanks!

Maintenance cost on the M119 motor is a bit more than IL 6's. There are two distributor caps, rotors etc. However, the M119 is a pretty bullet proof motor. Tensioner and guides are wear items and it is an involved process to change them. Gas mileage is outstanding. I generally get 21-22 in town and 28 on the road. As with all MB products from 93 - 97, the upper/lower harness and ETA suffer from the degradable wiring insultation. If not changed out by now, they will need to be. Surprisingly, the harness on the V8's is less than the 6's.

Value is a fleeting number. You should be able to get the car for the $3K range unless "mint" really means something.

thank you for the info! this one is $2,500 obo and it's a very nice silver color, by mint i think he just means there are no dents or scratches and the interior looks pretty much new as well. I think I may go look at it, that gas mileage is promising as well, it seems pretty close to the 6 cylinder mileage!

Gas mileage is similar, but what happens when you put your right foot down isn't. The 400E/E420's deliver power like there is no limit. It's like a drug you can't get enough of. I feel it is the best "sleeper" car out there. 75% of an E500, 1/3 or less of the cost.

Hi I saw your thread about a 300e. I have an 1989 300e that was my sons car that I am just finishing the detailing in prep for selling. This is a very nice car 114k original miles, from Florida and then California. We bought in 2007 for his Graduation. This car will make someone happy as it is like getting into a new car. I had to put a new cylinder head after my son let it get to warm after running AC in 100 degree So. Cal. heat. It runs great and looks better. The compression is 170 -175 all cylinders. The only problem may be the price I am seeking. Due to the condition and the low miles I am asking $6,500.00. I am in the Vancouver area of SW Washington. Let me know if you have any interest as it will be on Craigslist this weekend. Not to sound arrogant but as a MB owner for over 30 years, be cautious on seeking a low price on a car. If it has been well maintained then it is likely the car is in good shape. MB owners are smart. They buy the best, take care of it, and know the cars value. The chance of falling into the perfect car for a low price is unlikely. If it seems to good to be possible then look out. There are tons of nice 300's in So Cal. and the prices are lower than here. Good luck, Best Wishes PW

You mention you are new to the forum. Yes you are. I replied about my 89CE and you asked what part of the country I was located. My avitar shows I am in Woodinville,Wa. That's about 50 miles from you. As you spend more time on this forum you will continue to see statements "their is no cheap Mercedes" etc. Pay the price for something nice or be prepared to spend thousands on that $2000 CL dream car. Think about it this way. You are buying parts and service for a $50,000 car. If your not inclined to DIY you will go broke and still have a 18 to 20 year old car that needs something fixed. Good luck in your search.

$6,500 is a bit more than I was looking to spend, and quite above blue book especially for an '89! Though i realize the cheapest Mercedes is the most expensive. The ones I've been looking for have lowish mileage (100k-200k), complete maintenance history, and just a couple owners. They range from $1,000 for an earlier sedan to $4,000 for an E320 wagon. I think I'm getting close to making a purchase but I'll keep you posted! Everyone on here has been really helpful so far! I can't thank you all enough

and the DIY aspect is what brought me to the 124, that and its reliability, build quality, etc. I am VERY interested in doing the work myself, I have never taken a car to a shop for anything that I couldn't do in a week ;)
