Hi guys,
Anybody can tell me where is the transmission dip stick to check the fluid level ? and how much is to change that ? an indy shop quoted $250 !!!
My E55 06 costed $250.... S320 shouldnt be this expensive right ?

There is no dipstick. The dipstick/fill tube is there capped off by a plug which requires you to break off a red plastic tab to check the fluid level with a dipstick "tool." The dipstick can be purchased online. Once the plug is put back into place, in order to lock it securely in place, you need to replace the red clip with a new one (or it is possible to reuse the critical broken off piece of the clip to relock the plug).

you have 722.6 tranny which doesn't have dipstick and uses expensive fluid ($15/liter) $250 is a good price assuming they will drain almost all the old fluid out since your tranny has a drain plug from the torque converter. so if $250 includes draining old fluid from both the pan and torque converter drain plug, replacing tranny filter along with pan gasket, and refilling with mb approved tranny fluid, then that is a good deal. dealer charges around $400+ for a job like that.
also you can buy tranny dipstick on ebay for around $20-25 any time, or if you are cheap then buy 4.5-5 ft of 1/8" steel cable which is very flexible from any hardware store and use that as a dipstick. when fluid is fully hot the level should be between 55-65mm from the bottom of the cable, so you might want to put some colored tape between 55-65mm from the bottom of the cable. fluid is checked when is fully hot (car has been driven for about 15-20 min), car is left on, put in park, and check on leveled surface.

I just did the transmission oil change on my 97 SL 320 (same engine)at the dealer and paid $ 266.00
Oil 4 quart $ 14.00 = $56.00
Elastomer- Mo 1 = $14.00
Lock pin 1 = $ 0.80
oil filter 1 = $ 14.99

Labor $ 180.00

remember to tell your mechanic to drain the torque converter too, since your car has a torque converter drain plug (also all fluid can be removed via cooling lines). changing only 4L is only a partial fluid change, and it will still be brown color. you want it to be RED color after the change. so if the final bill mentions only 4L of new fluid, then they didn't drain all of it. also make sure you tell your mechanic to clean very good the pan once he lowers it when replacing the filter. a lot of mechanics don't clean it, but it is very important to clean it with a clean rag.
