Good observation there Peter .The seats are manual like ISS mentions , strange for an S class if you ask me ,a buyer for that car would expect them to be electric ,I would anyway .
The wheel on the side of the seat would move the backrest forward & backwards while that Lever there would move the bottom part of the seat up & down ,then I would expect a lever in front under the seat to move the seat forwards or more towards the back with a sliding motion.

Euro cars

We lived in Italy in the late '90s. Spent 2 wonderful years seeing the Country and venturing into neighboring Countries. I was driving a used Volvo which was adequate for what I wanted to do. I had never paid much attention to Mercedes before but when I saw what was in the fast lane on the Autostrade racking up mile after mile at 100+ I decided to take a longer look when I returned tot the US. I also started pricing out new cars in Europe thinking maybe I could buy one there and ship it home. I didn't look at Mercedes but Volvos since that is what I normally drove in the US. Ignoring their ridiculous VAT tax, the prices seemed quite reasonable until I saw what was included or more importantly what was NOT included. You paid extra for power seats, power windows, leather seats, sun roofs, etc. So yes, you probably could buy a Benz with manual seats. The more costly the car, the higher the taxes.

A lot of people don't realize that Mercedes are somewhat utilitarian cars in other parts of the world, as opposed to being luxury vehicles.

For many years, the North American market was unique for things like leather upholstery, automatic climate controls, power windows/seats, etc.

Go to Europe or other places and find manual climate controls, roll up windows, manual door locks, etc.

I'm from Europe. I saw a lot of Mercedes with all manual, no A/C, no sunroofs but it was w126's, w124's, w201's etc. but w140? wasn't it the flagship of brand? I guess they build cheap ones too.
