Hi guys,

I need a starter for this thing (never ends does it?). Its a '76 450SL.

I there are two starters available.

The SR59X
(Engines:013051-)

and the SR86X
(Engines:-013050)

They have the solenoids in different places. I'm pretty darn sure that i need the SR59X because the starter is on the passenger side and the solenoid is hanging downward toward the ground. I'd like to confirm with my engine number, but i'm not sure where it is.

My VIN is: 107 044 12 029788, but thats not my engine number, right?

I can pretty much 100% guarantee that you will need the 59X starter as your engine number should not be below 13050, but of course, best to check!

right here
Rowdie,

I hope you don't mind, but I'm saving that photo, it's a winner. I'm sick of trying to describe to people where it is!

Oh, and TXBDan, you best bet to read it easily, is to spray some degreaser in that area, then shine a torch!

Yes it can be right. You have a 985 engine while Foto and I have I have 982 engines. The last six are the production run. For instance my '73 chassis number is 008980 but my engine number is 011693.

Hrmm but being an early model disagrees with what i'm seeing under the car. Gah.
Maybe I'm not being clear enough. I think 1976 was the first year for the K-Jetronics fuel injection. That is when they changed the engine designation from 117.982 to 117.985. Your engine number would indicate it was #1374 of the 117.985 engine production run. Does not mean the car is an early production model. Your chassis number indicates where it falls in the production of the 107.044.12 chassis line. .

Right, but according to the starter descriptions, they changed starters sometime in '76 at the engine# 13050 mark, right? So if mine is only #01374, then its an early engine in the '76 year, right? Or am i missing something else.

I checked other parts suppliers and all show the 86X (though with diff. part #'s) as the one with the solenoid on the bottom, The other one mounts with the solenoid on top and boy are the wires a bitch to get to.
