My '99 ML430 doesnt have a "redline" as far as looking at the tach like most vehicles do. It just goes to 7000 with no color coding on the gauge. Ive had the vehicle for about 8 months and ive always thought this was curious but whatever.

Anyway tonight i was messing around with a late 90's model Mustang GT at the stoplight (i had seen him weaving in and out of traffic behind me acting so i figured what the hell when he pulled up beside me at the light). Anyway, light changed and i stomped it and in first gear it went right on up to 7000RPM before it changed to second gear. Is my tranny on the way out?? Where does this thing redline??

(all jokes aside-yes i know my tranny WILL be on the way out if i drive it like that but this was just one time in 8 months-not a habit. I have a Z and R1 for that mess).

Street snarls can be fun, but do a ECU/tranny reset to factory defaults which are "agressivve" and your shift points will change and become more effective.

If I floor it, coming out of first gear it will go to like 6800 or 6900 if I remember correctly, pretty much the end of the gauge. But then it starts shifting lower. I don't think there is anything wrong.

Yep-thanks man. Thats right around where mine shifted-it happened so fast i wasnt sure. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd yeah it shifts at a lower point.

Im kinda surprised a V8 from 11 years ago would rev that high...thats a pretty high redline!!

The all aluminum 4.6 Ford SVT 32v V8 in the Cobras is 7000 starting in 1996 with
rev limiter coming on at 7200. They are handmade engines. Very durable engine.

The ML and E500 impress the hell out of me as to how fast they get up in the revs in both
1st and 2nd gear. If did not have a blower on the Cobra the E500 might win a 1/4 mile drag race.
Newer Cobras kept adding power but went to an iron block and gained some weight.

Very interesting. I didnt know the Cobra engines revved that high (back then anyway) but with DOHC and 32 valves i can see it. The ML430 is 24 valve and SOHC.....now revving that high is impressive!
