I would not expect a facelift until the 2004 model year at the earliest. It's hard to see how they'd improve on the exterior, though.
I know that Mercedes-Benz is working on direct gasoline injection engines and supposedly will be phasing them in their passenger car range over the coming few years. I read that the four cylinder engines will be first, followed soon thereafter by the sixes and eights. I'd expect to see the first of the GDI engines in the 2003 model year (a guess) and perhaps the GDI V6s for the 2004 model year.
One complication is that many GDI engines require low sulfur fuel and in Canada (and USA I think) the levels of sulfur in fuel are quite high.
Exactly what this means for North American versions, I don't know. Mercedes-Benz Canada says that this is the reason their excellent CDI direct injection diesels are not offered in North America - too much sulfur.
Perhaps the oil companies will offer special (and more expensive) "no sulfur fuel" soon.
