17" is generally accepted as the biggest wheel without substantial rub problems, even when the car is lowered. There are drivers with 18 and 19's, but most have modified the fender lip, wheel liner, etc.

...ok said "substantial rub prob.s" that means they will rub at full turn?!?!?!?!...im thinking of getting 17x7.5's wrapped with 205-45-17 or 195-40-17 which ever will "fit by my standards(no rubbing)" and look best!!!! please post a reply...

I have 215/40x17 Kumho 712's on my 16 valve................

The wheels are AMG 170's 7.5" wide (the older monoblock wheels) The set up looks good, and I only get a VERY minor rub over some really nasty bumps in my neighborhood.

I tracked the car with this wheel/tire combo and had no problems.

The fender flares are plastic add ons on top of the "stock" fenders.............

so I would guess that there is actually slightly less clearance. The point of rub in front is on the front edge of plastic fairing, not the metal fender.

I put the five spoke split spoke wheels and tires from my SLK 32 on the 16 valve for a while and it looked fantastic, but the bigger 225/45x17's rubbed on the front steel fenders, and the rear 245/40x17's in back rubbed the plastic flares in the back. They didn't rub bad, but it got to be annoying after a while. I imagine rolling the fenders some would have cured the problem, but I needed the split spokes for track tires on the SLK anyway, so......
The 16 valve looked very impressive with the 245's in back!

On a 7.5" wide wheel, I wouldn't go below the 205. For NO rubbing issues, I'd recommend 215/40-17 tires.

ok thanks thats what i want to hear, so you are telling me if i put 17x7.5 w/ 215-40-17 i will almost never rub??? that is som e good news...now one more question with 17's will the car look like its really high off the ground, do i have to lower it or leave as is??? im pretty sure the wheel-well will be almost full so i wont have to lower it to hide the spring and shocks, its just a matter if how i like the height?? or will i have to lower it???

Yes, according to the folks at www.190revolution.net - there are a LOT of posts about wheel/tire sizes, and 215/40-17 seem to give the best results.

17's will the car look like its really high off the ground, do i have to lower it or leave as is???

That's going to something you'll have to determine. On mine, the rear tires fill up the well, but up front I can see the struts easily. I can't say if your car will look the same.
