Ok, I have kind of a n00bie question.

I have a w126 280 SEL ( AMG )
I've seen W124 280SEL
also W123 280SEL
Not sure but think I've seen W220? 280SEL..
Maybe a few other W's also
Why all the same numbers for diffrant body styles?

The Ws are chassis styles the 280/300/320/420 so on so on are engine sizes and the letters are usually body styles sometimes this changes a bit for example in the 80s 90s there was the 190 2.6 but generally it follows thru would say it unlikly to see a 123 280 sel or a 124 sel but yes a 123/4/6 280 unless someone fooling around with badges

regards niallhere

the w124 with the 2.8 engine is a E 280

the w123 with the 2.8 engine is a 280 E

the w220 is only equipped with the 3.2 and 3.5
6 cylinder engines...

W126 = Chasis model
280 = Engine displacement (2800CC)
S = S class
E = Eletronic fuel injection
D = Diesel
L = Long base

together they make W126 - 280SEL for gasoline powered engines and 280SDL for diesel powered engines

that was upto 1994 i belive.. after that the naming convention changed a little bit
