i've been reading all these old posts and filling your spin-on with ATF seems completely acceptable, even recommended. this sounds like a completely ludacris thing to do but i assume it isn't, seeing as a few of you seemingly trustworthy and knowledgable guys condone it. my question is why should i do this rather than filling it with diesel? while i'm at it, another question:
what the heck does the ALDA looking thing on my IP do on a non-turbo 240?
and another:
why can't i get that last little air bubble out of my primary? (clear) fuel filter?

ATF lubes the IP.

The ALDA on an N/A car increases fuel flow in relation to a decrease in atmospheric pressure, if one were driving from the seaside to the mountains, for example.

A little bubble or space at the very top of the clear filter is OK.

ATF also stinks less than diesel if you get it on your hands. But the best stuff to fill it with would be diesel purge.

The theory is that the ATF will help lubricate the injector pump and clean the injectors. I say theory because I've heard several diesel mechanics swear by it. On the other hand I've read several articles saying it does not do any good what so ever. I used to do it regularly as a maintenance procedure, myself, but have since ceased. I do still use the ATF to fill the canister filter, during replacement, for a couple of reasons. I usually don't have the diesel lying around as where I do have ATF. ATF will readily burn as fuel in a diesel engine. For me it's just easier.

alright, so the ATF won't hurt... might help, leave the "ALDA" alone and quit thumping at the filter and spewing diesel everywhere in hopes of purging that tiny bubble. thanks for the advice and, to MBZ300CD, i was pretty sure that i was the only person that bought "alligator" but turns out, there were two of us, lol.
