If you were in Germany, and didn't have to pay for shipping to the U.S. (or other parts of the world) and had the ability to buy goods with a 16% VAT discount...what parts and/or accesories would you be likely to purchase for your G?

Here's what I think I'll start with:

SPARES: Water Pump, Timing Chain, Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders, Thermostat, Wheel Bearings, Fan Belt, Valve Cover Gasket.

DOO-DADS: ALUTEC MB Vantastic Wheels (6.5x16H2)
ARB Roof Rack (Extrem Motorsport?), Fender Flares (ORC or MB).

What else would you want from the Motherland?

Thanks, Shawn

Almost everything you have in your list- except for the clutch cylinders, the wheel and the flares - can be purchased at lower prices at discount suppliers in the US.

Now the other question is do you also get a diplomatic, expat or even tourist discount from MB. Then I would be looking for a nice brand new G55 Cabriolet..... hey you didn't specify a price. [:D]

But seriously, if it is for your 1980 240, how about some replacement body panels as I'm sure you will have rust spots...

Thanks Dutch, I think the wheels and fender flares are "must buys" before I leave. How about 6.17 gears (I plan to run 235s w/32" OD on the 240) and the military 5-speed?--(could be partially funded by tax return ;)) Do you think these parts would be cheaper in Deutschland or back home? Any other size or weight prohibitive items that I should consider?

BTW: I think it's going to be a while before my truck needs any body panels--it was restored a couple years back and is in incredible shape. Unless of course I end up living in New England again. I once had a near-new Jeep CJ7 that went from zero rust to "ventilated flooring" in only two seasons--jeesh.

Get all of the parts for a front axle service. Consider also spare lighting lenses. A front windshield seal. The plastic covers that fit over the exterior vents in the rear. Motor mounts and a transmission mount.

Two extra used trucks for spare parts? [:D]

I'm not sure if import laws apply if you arent going to drive/register the vehicle and are just using it for parts, but it might be less expensive to just buy a full working vehicle than to buy all those parts.

[edited because I spell gud]

With the way the dollar/Euro is, all of this would be cheaper in the US. I just imported a new G500 Cab from Germany and what would have been 80k( basically same price as G500) here was 100k there without the tax. Not a good time to buy in Europe.

If you are refering to the old gearbox from MB minivans with 1st. gear=6.17 and 5th.=1 ? -then you dont need 6.17 final ratios to run 32" tires.
Your roadspeed will be terrible low with that setup.

By using that granny gearbox and stock 4.88 diff you get far better crawl ratio than using 6.17 final ratio and the more common 4 and 5 speed gearboxes.
