i'm toying with the idea of buying a second car. right now it's just my '89 560SEL; i recently sold my '07 C230. i'm leaning towards a 400E, but i'm wondering -- if you were to get a second/next benz to complement your w126 experience, what would it be? please keep it realistic -- i'd love to own a 300SL gullwing, but it ain't gonna happen anytime in the near future...

Old Volvo.

This may surprise you, but I lived in the city for about 9 years with the 560SEC, and let's face it, that is NOT the kind of car you'd want to take to the store, to Union Square, Serramonte, Stonestown, the Marina, the Mission, Bernal, Excelsior, etc.

So.....I had a 1991 volvo 740. Nice little city car, very safe and sturdy, sips gas, wonderful Volvo mechanics around Exclusively Volvo on Valencia the best, AutoCentrum on 16th good too, THEY TURN ON A DIME to nab those rare parking spots, they are pretty politically correct, they last forever, there are 100 more reasons to own a car like that.

I bet you could pick one up at one of the weekly SFPD tow auctions for about $200 that needed a little work...or get one good to go off Craigs'.

Better yet, get a nice suburban owned one from Burlingame, Marin County or Walnut Creek or Danville..... wagon or sedan, just make sure it's a 740 or 940, the little 112 hp 4 cyllinder. Avoid diesels or the 6 cylinder ones.

For that matter, a second good choice would be one of the big 240 ones, same great engine, all the old Volvo virtues.

ps: I am likely going to be down in the city doing the tour guide pretty soon, with this girl I like, from Livermore, in the next week or two or three; are you up for a cup of coffee in the Mission, or Ti Couz on 16th, or North Beach or something? Maybe we could
talk SF and W126s; Just a thought. pm me.

An r129 sl500. they are at rock bottom prices right now representing so much car for the money. and it's a mercedes and a convertible. the best ones are the 1996 and newer cars with the updated harder wearing interior. make sure it's a 500 because the 300 and 320 use almost as much fuel but are a lot slower. don't forget it is a very heavy car. visit the r129 forum for advice and ideas.

Agreed

I agree 100%. Only difference for me would be an SEL to go with my SEC! I want 1 day try and make a 1987 Mercedes Range Garage, w201, w124, w126 sedan, w126 coupe and r107 all in #122 Pearl Grey and all 1987 Models. SEC with same colour combinationand vintage as your SEL would look very good in the garage next to the SEL!

Really depends on your wants/needs. Do the soaring gas prices concern you? If so, probably don't want to get another gas guzzler. Do you need it to be a 4 door? Can it be a convertible? The 124 convertibles are cool, so are the 129's. Or get a coupe like an SEC or CD/CE. If you want another passenger car, the 190E 2.6 or 400E are great too.

I'd say a W201, or a w124.

I agree. My next Benz is going to be a '97 SL500 with Pano roof. Still world class quality before Chrysler took over. Amazing vehicles and like Banana said an absolute bargain and at the bottom of their depreciation cycle. These vehicles were $100+k new in the late 90's!

Don't totally discount the 960 or S90. I have one with 204,000 miles that has given very little trouble and still performs well, and looks like it has half the mileage. Like buying a w126, if the service history is there you aren't going to get burned.
The fours are reliable, but awfully slow.
Volvo is second behind MB in my preference of cars.

NEVER for San Francisco.

I think a nice SEC will go very well with your SEL. :D
Yes but not in SAN FRANCISCO where the cars get destroyed, disrespected, vandalized, crashed, dinged, bashed and beat to death in 1,000 different ways.

Not to mention they suck up premium gas like crazy, in traffic on the hills and everywhere, and San Francisco has the most expensive gas prices in the country of any large US city. WAY over $4.20 a gallon for Supreme now, and going up all the time.

I know, I had one there, for 9 years, and there is NO worse everyday driver than a nice big Mercedes there.

He needs a beater car for that city.
