Hi guys,

I have just purchased this without really knowing much about it. It costed me around 1000$ only.

It does run and drive and the underside of it looks very clean with no much of surface rust. planning to get it into good shape and use it around the off-road trucks here.

I have no idea of the history of the truck but I bought it from a scrap componey and saved it from going to the crusher. It was working in the Desert for a turkish oil contractor called "fernas" or something like that for the last years of its life but I dont know from where it came before that. The contractor was operating in the "empty quarter desert" of arabia at the border between Saudi Arabia and Oman.

I managed to get into the car and the soft top is fully intact (no rips or rot in the fabric both outside and inside). The odometer readsabout 24,500 klm and I believe its the original mileage (the meter looks very new so am not sure if it belongs to a newer model or something). everything else in the cabin cluster gauges seems to be in place and not brocken/missing. The floors of the cab are solid wit zero rust. The doors are intact with zero rust too.

It has a (?diesel engine) which I got an X-mercedes diesel mechanic to look at and he said it looks like a different varient that he didnt see before. Can any one tell me anything about this engine from the pics ? Are parts available ?

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

That would be a 404.1 of some variation. If you look on the passenger side framerail below the cab there should be a number etched in the frame starting with 404.1..... and that will tell you what variation of 404 it is. There also should be a i.d. plate under the hood on the passenger side with this information also. As far as the diesel, it would be interesting to know what was swapped into it.

Excellent find by the way and it looks to be in great shape. Congrats.:D:thumbsup:

Welcome to the Unimog community!
Very nice looking unimog 404. As for the diesel engine.. very few of the 404 came as diesel so probably they put a MB diesel from some other truck or car. Take few pics from the engine and people here in the forum will tell you wich engine you have.

The only factory diesel would the 404.117 which was built for military use by Angola. It would be an open cab with an OM615, the 4cyl putt-putt diesel from the 200 series cars. It's anemic and prone to needing head work every so often but will run FOR EVER if oiled regularly.

According to record, only 81 were minted in the 1969/1970 production cycle. Series production numbers will fall between 056545-059189. So say RMM.

The way the engine looks doesnt seem to be a swapped engine at all.

I have seen few cars and trucks with swaped engines but this one doesnt seem to be like them. If this truck turned to be an original diesel engine 404, then itwill make it somehow unique ?

Some one mentioned about the "pizza" wheels ?!. is that something thatcan tell me something about the production and age of this thing ?

Excuse me ignorance about these things guys as I logged and searched for "old" mercedes 4x4 and found 2 forums that address them. expedition portant and this site. So am not at all aware ofany information other then those clear from looking at the truck or those i concluded my self.

You help will be really appreciated to advice me on how easy is it to run these trucks and what type of parts i will need and from where i will find them. Am loated in Dubai so everything will be bought from somewhere else as i never seen anything similar like this before.

Thank you.

The square plate on the back of the glove box housing, right above and behind the air filter. Clean it off gently and tell us the numbers that are on it.

There should also be a engine part number / model number cast into the side of the cylinder head, if you can get to it.

You have to love desert trucks - except for the paint, they will last forever !

hmmmm. do I see two hydraulic reservoirs on that 404?

Hydraulic clutch? Do you have hanging brake and/or and clutch pedals? OEM 404 had lever pedals thru the floor

Very interesting beast say to least.

Most definitely an engine swap if above pic is what I think it is. The engine radiator remotely mounted with an elec. fan on it.

Verify if the thing is still 24v like stock. Then you need to determine if the fan on that radiator is 12v or 24v.

The thing u noticed under the front left corner of the bed is the A/C radiator or whatever it is called. u can also notice the AC between the seats.

The driver of this truck needed the AC as it gets >55*C in the summer.

ahhhh... ok....makes since. Wonder how it would work with such small diameter tubing feeding an engine radiator.

But what about the chassis numbers. If you cannot read the plate you will find it stamped into the frame in the passenger wheel well. This number will look something like:

404.XXX.XXXXXX

The second set will tell us some specifics on this truck and the third set would allow you to get very specific equipment information.

Knowing what you are starting with will be a great help in identifying what may have been done along the line.

You sir are the proud owner of a mutt. Perhaps one of our esteemed parts hustlers can scare up a build sheet on this truck.
