going to look at a 1992 190e 2.3 with 150k on it tomorrow. Anything particular i should take notice of ? it would be nice to know any common faults especially if its substantial enough to be a deal breaker.

Also now a days what would you consider a fair price for the car if its in really nice shape but has 150k on it. Thanks a bunch !

come on 157 views and nothing, are these cars that bulletproof ? i didnt see much in the stickies, mostly transmission.... that it ??
Long story short for ya :
92-93 weren't bulletproof at all : Tranny , head gasket and domino affect to T/chain at the same time. Bargain start from here .

There are quite a few threads on what to look for on buying already.

Basically drive the car as long as possible to be sure it doesn't overheat, stall, or shift rough. Make sure the engine is cold before you start the test drive.

Rust usually occurs at the jack points, so check there.
Look under the oil cap for milky oil and check in the coolant reservoir tank for oil. These would be signs of a bad head gasket, which seems to happen sometimes on these cars.

Basically check if the transmission shifts smoothly, the engine doesn't stall, and that the fluids look good.

You are talking about a 20 year old car. What do you expect? You'll just put gas in for another 20 years and go with zero issues?
No but i dont want to do timing chains gears guides , head gaskets and a new tranny. Im ok with normal maintenance though lol

Assuming the car didnt have those issues, its black on black with no rust and the interior is mint including the seats, also has sunroof. Does 2k sound like a fair price ?

I hate to appear as if I am arguing with fellow owners, but I would describe my car as bullet proof. I had to replace my head gasket in 2004 because of the creamy froth in the overflow canister, but other than that and ordinary maintenance, my 8v has been superb.

I have none of the horror stories I hear about with my 8v. There is no stalling at all. Fuel economy is great and power is awesome. Rust is non-existent anywhere on the car. The transmission was rebuilt once in 2004 as a preventive measure and by a specialist in these transmissions. It has 188,300 miles and my son who drive my 16v to Canada and back this summer will take his road test in the 8v later this month. That's the same son who arrived home after his birth from the hospital in the same 8v.

It seems to be a cradle-to-grave automobile from my son's perspective: his cradle to his grave.

Let me correct myself : Mostly and chances are for these 92-93 2.3 -8v (2.3-16V is cannon proof) when hit over 140K based on my and other experiences to consider .:eclipsee_steering:

I'll take some pics tomorrow and put them up. The story is the car had a tree branch go threw the rear window which shattered it and it was left outside for a year like that:eek: Apparently the eldery women who owned it was on her death bed so it was of no consequence to her. The guy i bought it from replaced the rear window but its a tad musty inside to say the least. Fortunately the seats front and back are still in perfect condition. However the abundance of moisture caused some issues with the wood bits inside delaminating a bit. The only other issue is a small spot of rust on the rear of the rocker by the drain hole about half dollar size. Like i said its got a few issues but with a confirmed 60k drivetrain and no accidents reported I figured i can't go too far wrong. Heck its gotta be worth more than $600 in parts !

If it has all the parts you need, buy it. You could even redo the head gasket when you have some spare time.
