I'm currently looking at a 1994 S320 for my first car. As I don't have much experience with mercs, I'm wondering what things should I look out for when I purchase the car. Also, are they really heavy on petrol? and how reliable are they?

Just as a side question, has anyone fitted hydraulics or air suspension to their S320, cos I plan on carrying out this modification. And does anyone know where I can find engine tuning bits and bodykits, cos the brabus website doesn't have anything for the W140.

thanks

The best way to "tune the engine" on an S320 is to sell it and buy an S420 or S500. The W140 is not known as a reliable car, and paying for a Mercedes specialist mechanic to do repairs is expensive. If you do your own work, then repair costs can be reasonable. The W140 is a very heavy car so it is hard on tires and suspension bushings. Just realize that you are buying a 12 year old car and that there will be many things to fix right off the bat. Budget at least $2000 and probably better $3000 for initial work.

If you search the forum, you will find similar threads where your question about what to look out for will be answered.

Some body kits pop up on ebay. Other Mercedes tuners are Lorinser, Renntech, Carllson.

If you are short on ca$h dont get into the game, The AC will set you back at least $4,000, closing assist and suspension bushings add to the budget. I have had a 92 500 SEL since 94 and 2/3,000 per year has been the rule. I also want everything perfect, if you find one with good records buy, it if you dont pass on it. You are not going to make a low rider out of it and the word is "because"

Wonderful ride, unreliable and expensive. The W140's are a mixed bag, to be sure. In terms of fuel consumption, frankly I am very pleased with my '95 S 320 SWB. Takes the premium fuel (don't even think of using less), but I get between 21-22 mpg with mixed town/hwy driving, and get just over 500 miles to a tank full. Not bad for such a beast. But I don't have a heavy foot (not on this car, anyway. Strictly cruiser...)
