I was wondering what early 2000s Mercedes either gas or diesel is best. I just paid of my 01 Jetta 1.8T 5spd and i have about 5.5k saved up. I would like to get around the same 30mpg or better that my jetta gets as well as the same or better reliability.
I have been looking at the w210's with the 3.2 V6 or the diesel. Do they get around 30+ MPG? Also I really like the W208 CLK with the 3.2. how good are those on gas as well.

I drive 100-150 miles a day so I want comfort, reliability, safety and good mileage.

Each newer diesel gives you better economy.
You chose not to disclosure your location, so I have to speculate. If you are in US - W210 were not available here with cdi engines. The E300DT is 36 mpg rated and it does that when driven at 70 mph. At least ours did years ago before government start putting more and more hard to burn stuff in diesel fuels.
Coming to Jetta - years ago I had a year long project with 500 miles "commute".
For few months I was using 2003 Jetta TDI wagon. Than I bought 2005 E320cdi.
Driven on the same route, with the same speeds they did the same 32 mpg. I was making 500 miles in 6 hr of driving for the record
Seeing you driving diesel already, I doubt you will like any gasser.
Jetta might be reliable, but paying car value for timing belt replacement is not my cup of tea
