my tires are totally bald and I thought that I sould get new rims at the same time. What rims do you recommend? Also what kind of tire is the best to use? I am considering used rims and tires if any one has a set for sale at a good price. Any info will help. -Thanks -Kristian

also should I get chrome or regular rims?[;)]

Scott thanks for the advice...

i will go with silver not chrome...and i will go with amg monoblock...the last thing i want to finalize is whether to go for 19" ..and if it makes a big difference over 18"... but if it will sacrifice ride comfort i guess i have to stick to 18"?

what do people in here think ...18 or 19?

thanks

well on my s320 + 18 monoblocks, the ride is very nice: a little firmer than stock. 19's will still be driveable, but i believe you might have some problems with rubbing, especially over bumps and down dips. the bigger the rim, the larger the chance of bending it after going over a pothole.

but if this car doesn't go over rough roads and you're looking for a standout ride, get 19's. check with your dealer about the necessity of rolling the fenders (or more probable, someone on the board will post what needs to be done, if anything, to fit 19's)

i sort of wish i had taken the plunge for 19's....the 18's look smaller every day i look at them :( ....maybe i should lower the frame an inch or so
19" inch rims?

Hey scottschoe, thanks again..

i think i will go with 19" monoblock...unless someone here on the forum would say the 19" would sacrifice the ride and control drastically..

There is a guy that own i think s600 or s500..he has 20" on his ..i think his name is eric......maybe he can comment..

Can anyone comment on 19" and if it would be still ok to put them on w140...? and also if you know if anyone can recommend THE BEST 19" ALL SEASON TIRE TO USE?

THANKS

19"

Hi !

I installed 19" Wheels and 255/40 tires...think that they fit nicely. Lowering springs were also installed.

I bet they ride nicely. Especially if you drive her on grass.

I just got a set of original 8.5x18

I just got a set of original 8.5x18" AMG Monoblocks. I spoke to many specialists before buying. Their general opinion was that 19" wheels make the ride a little too harsh on the roads here in London.
19" wheels are more susceptible to kerb rash. The lower profile of the tyre makes for a harsher ride and makes the alloy rim more likely to buckle if you are unlucky enough to hit potholes in the road.

Take a look at the 16" wheels that are on your car now. I bet you that there is some rash or other damage on the outer lip (not necessarily caused by you - maybe a previous owner) . I can guarantee that this will look 10 folds worse on a larger rim and the damage would have been a lot more than a slight scratch.

19" tyres are not as readily available as 18" tyres and they are more expensive to replace.

I went for 255 width tyres with rim protection to protect the outer lip of the wheels.

Its important to me that my car remains driveable, and just as smooth as it was with the original 16" wheels that were on her.

Good luck with your choice of replacement - I'm not trying to influence your decision, just pointing out the risks that were pointed out to me

hope this helps.....

your rims

w140gill:

do your 18" still look big on your car, cuz the previous poster mentioned that the 18" are looking smaller and smaller to him each day...

i am just wondering how some like erik manage to put 20" on their car, specially when you mentioned the issues of harsher ride and tire damage with bigger then 18" rims.

Any input would be appreciated.

They look bigger than the stock 16's but....not with the ghetto 'rude boy' look. The wheel arches still have room inside them.

If you are getting larger wheels purely for the visual cosmetic effect than I am afraid you will not be satified with 18" wheels. Just take a look at the various pictures on this site.
If you can hold out until after this weekend, I'll post some pictures of my car

Its a medical condition. The wheels look smaller and smaller day after day till they disappear infront of your eyes.

Ancient cure for this is to buy a Toyota Corolla S type and put neons under the chasis..It cures the desease..

Hope you feel good..

Sorry but for $1000 you're pretty limited on what you can get. Most likely only used rims and tires but AMG's or Lorinsers or any good wheels will run you about $2500.
