my tires are totally bald and I thought that I sould get new rims at the same time. What rims do you recommend? Also what kind of tire is the best to use? I am considering used rims and tires if any one has a set for sale at a good price. Any info will help. -Thanks -Kristian

also should I get chrome or regular rims?[;)]

AMG

IMHO, AMG rims look the best on Benzes. The only problem is that they're quite expensive...

definately go with amg monoblocks, either in 18 or 19 inch. I put on some 18" monoblock aero-II's on my 98 silver s320, and it looks great. check out tirerack for a package. generally try to stay away from used rims...no point in risking wheel integrity for a few less dollars.

The best place to get used wheels is ebay. Although i love monoblocks, they are too common. You can also look for nice carlssons and lorinsers as well. iam in process of upgrading my wheels and tires, but i will wait for a little longer more.
Re: getting monoblocks

I really like the monoblocks with the small bolts on them but they cost a little too much. If I wait 2 months I can get them but for now I can spend no mre than $1000 on rims and tires. The only problem is my tires are 100% bald and I should not be driving on them. But If I get new tires I will be stuck.
If anyone sees rims and tires or has a set they want to sell for around 1000 or less please let me know
-Thanks.

also should I get chrome or the regular finish?
-thanks -Kristian
regular finish...

I would go for regular finish... Chrome is just unnecessarily flashy.
Re: regular finish -I agree

I agree. I dont want to look faashy. But all my friends are telling me to get chrome. I think that I will stick with the regular finish though. I will probably have less problems with the police too.
-thanks, Kristian[;)][;)]

Chrome sometimes give the 'ghettoness' touch. Its like, "hey look at me, what iam driving"

black rims are a tough one to pull off well, but if they match your body well then the car looks "hard" (check out wald's kits)

for your 600, don't go with chrome because it might clash with your two-tone exterior. or if you're willing to repaint the bottom half of the car black, chrome will look great.

The STAR magazine (MB owners club) had an excellent article several issues ago about tires and wheels. Try their web site.

the konig

maxxim vip is the replica youre looking for. town fair tire has them in various sizes. I got mine for my 2002 ml for 710 bucks. try a search for konig on the google. I wish I had pics but I redid my computer and they are gone. look in the m class forum and search for my posts of the mods I did to my ml and you will see the rims.

rims and wheels

The majority seem to agree on amg monoblock....are they the same amg areo II monoblock?...

I am also looking for some rims and wheels for my 97 S500 (Black/Black). Is regular finish the same as silver finish?

Most are recommending 18"...is 19,20 too ghetto? and do they affect the ride (wont fit as well?)?

thanks

Correct, Regular finish is silver finish. Then there is the chrome finish. 18" is the size that came with the Grand Edition in 1999 and represents a good balance between improved performance and decreased ride quality. While 19" may look better the ride will not be as forgiving.
rims size and kind

Thanks mpm for the information. I think i am gonna go with 18". I am not sure if chrome would be still classy on the car. I hear chrome doesnt look that good on a classy s class. I also live in wisconsin and i will be driving the car in the winter. I heard that salt will ruin the life of the chromes.

Any advice on what winter tires are best, and whether to stick to silver rather then chrome,? would be appreciated..

don't do 20" because that's a huge ride sacrifice...and there aren't any amg rims made that size. 19's are somewhat harsh on the ride, but it's not annoyingly so. as long as you get something made by amg you don't have to worry about it looking classy.

if you have salt on the roads, avoid chrome.

imo i'd avoid rims that look like the ones CL600_w140 is selling....that would compromise the look you're trying to get.
