Mercedes found that most ML owners removed the center rear seat headrest for better rear visibility so they added the clamps to hold the headrest in place under the seat. My 98ML did not have them so I had to make a makeshift harness to keep the headrest from sliding around.

I recommend your owner's manual - you might find out some useful features of your ML.

I see your point and feel the same on many posts asking for help. However, if I came across two clamps in a not so obvious place, I don't know where I would start. One would have to read the entire manual and even at that, look at your post, it would be very easy to overlook the two clamps on page 97 of the manual. That picture looks nothing like the actual clamps. I found the clamps by accident in my 05ML when preparing to store the center headrest using a makeshift hold down harness like I made for my 98ML.

thanks mike.

as everybody knows manuals are not always identical.
after digging further into the book i did find one reference about the head restraint storage and now it's clear to me why i missed it until now!

thanks again.

can't thank you enough kind sir!
You're most welcome, and thank you for your photo, which I shall use as reference to retrofit these clamps in my '02. I have never seen them before, either online or IRL.

For future readers who would prefer to do this over Mike's harness solution, P/N is A1638130014 "bracket (headrest)".

I don't recommend reading the manual through to page 97 - try browsing at your leisure, waiting in queues or on public transport. You'll come across stuff incidentally.

Seems to be a finishing touch after the extensive updates for MY2002. Somehow gotca's car has the clamps but they're not described in his manual. I also note that the "floor flaps" were renamed "cargo floor plates" in late '02/early '03.

I can't get my 60 portion of the 60/40 seat to flip forward to look at this option. I can tilt the seat back forward and I can lower the seat cushion to the floor as I move the entire seat forward towards the back of the front seat on the drivers side. On the 40 portion I can flip the seat back down, lower the seat bottom cushion as it moves forward toward the back of the front passenger seat and I can flip the entire folder seat assembly forward allowing easier access to the 3rd row seats and if needed can hual a long item on the not so flat floor from tailgate to flipped forward seat. IS the 60% portion seat suppose to also flip forward in a manner that allows longer items to be hauled on the drivers side? I have used the owners manual page 93 and 94 to no avail.
