And, more importantly, to what does it connect?

You're looking at the driver's side of the transmission, just before the cross-member (visible in the lower portion of the photo). That rusty rod in the background is the shift link. I'm refering to the white wire.

Thanks fellas. If that's the case, where would I re-attach it to? I couldn't see anything that looked blatantly obvious.

Regardless, if it's just for the kick-down, I can live without it for now.

The solenoid is in the rear passenger side of the tranny case about 2:00 looking dead into the rear of the tranny it is round with 1 wire coming out of it. They get severed sometimes. If it is severed, you don't have 1st gear(B) from a start or braking down hill.
If your Car kicks down with the pedal to pass or?? then the solenoid is working and that isn't that wire.

I don't know if the car kicks-down, as I've yet to even fire it up. I just noticed that now when I under there removing the driveshaft.

I'm not sure if the wire is even long enough to reach to where you're saying it should go to...
