In the middle of changing my valve cover gasket I see this. Doesn't seem very Mercedes-ish :dunno:

The silver stuff looks like anti-seize grease and the black stuff looks like high-temp silicone from when someone tried to reuse the valve cover gasket.

Is it sticky or rubbery?

Now that I look at again it definitely looks like unmixed JB Weld. Wouldn't know why someone would put it there though.

The JB monster attacked my turbo oil supply lines when I first purchased this car, so who knows.

Just finished up and car runs much better now. The gasket was hard as plastic and very brittle. Will post an acceleration video here in a few.

If you look in the Body repair section of an Autopart store you might find a tube of something called Liquid Steel or Liquid Metal.
It is not really liquid or metal but it dries to be a hard silver colored plastic as described.

If the person who used it had degreased all the contact areas that the gasket is supposed to seal on the Liquid Steel might have worked to seal. However, I do not think it is made to take the Heat of an Engine.
