I think the nipple is used by the crank position sensor. TDC is the "0" mark.

That comments says there could also be a "0" mark 180 degree on the other side of the damper. (BDC = bottom dead center) make sure to use the one near the pin.

That make sense!
You you know what is the purpose of the sensor?
