I am getting mixed information, some have said the Becker Europa II with cassette and some say the Becker Grand Prix 612.

To get official "collector" status I need for my insurance it has to have a period correct radio (within 2-3 years)

So There is some flexibility on what radio I install, so it just comes down to cost at this point.

Thanks for your radio history. I have a rebuilt Becker Mexico Stereo with bluetooth in my 1980 450 SL done by Becker Autosound in Saddlebrook, New Jersey. I replaced an Alpine stereo with all the bells and whistles that seemed out of place. I am an enthusiast but unfortunately not a purist.

A Becker II Europa o'r Mexico Cassette will do, as a matter of fact any Pinstripe will do the trick - remember that radios were an optional extra and usually fitted by the dealership.

No worries, I also have a 79 450 SL and upgraded from the "dishwasher" Becker (which is period correct for the early 80's) to the "pinstripe" - which is the 70's equipment and in my humble view fits much in terms of aesthetics with the interior.

Just happy to have one. Don't know if it works or is original to my car, but.......
Doesn't matter if it's original to your car. It's the right style and could have been an option. I changed the original radio (Europa, I think) to a Mexico AM/FM/Cassette because I like the cassette player--for no particular reason.
