hi everybody

i had changed my brakes pads more than 3 times within the last 3 years - i had changed without shutting down the SBC Control Unit - am still having the "service brake" msg each time i turn on the car -"got the last 2 years"

Brakes are working super fine with me - so what is the worst can happened ? does this mean that the SBC control unit is working fine but it need for re-programming or something like this - since am not facing any troubles with my brakes ??

Am having 2004 E-240

In any event, the SBC pump warranty is extended for 10 years, so if it needs service take it in.
I don't know if that's the case in whatever country he's in. Seeing as he has an E240, I'm pretty sure it's not US.

Actually, I'm more curious about why he seems to go through a set of pads a year.

I was thinking this too, a set of pads per year and warning light on?????

My E500 is on the 3rd set of front pads at 93,000 miles and 2nd rear set.

The dealer changed the first set of front at 35,000 when the + showed in the FSS. The same for the rears. After that the next time the + came on I bought new pads and did the job myself. What I found is that I estimate I could have driven another 25,000 miles (based on my wife's driving habits) on the pads so they were changed early. But this was about 3 yrs between service.

If his car is needing pads yearly there must be dragging brakes and possibly a malfunction in the SBC system. There is really something wrong unless he is very high mileage each year. (note he does not say what the mileage is, it could be a taxi)

Have you tried replacing the brake light switch? Takes 10 minutes to replace and costs less than $10 in the US. I had that message on my E500 without any brake problems, and that's what fixed it.

ummm - no i didnt - where the loaction of the brake light switch ? and what is it doexaclty ?
The brake light switch is behind the brake pedal lever and simple to change. It operates the brake lights and is also connected into the brake/SBC system so if it goes faulty warning lights come on.

This is quite possible, would be accurately shown if codes were read with Star.

On a W211 the switch is at the brake pedal assembly, easy to find if the panel is removed. I think it is the same even for face lift models (often traditional brakes with BAS have a travel sensor and a stop light switch at the booster).

aha great - so do i need to shut any thing off before i change it ?
No just change it, it may not be the answer but as DB has just pointed out we would need to use test equipment such as Star to be more accurate.
