Hi Guys!

Forgive my ignorance but I keep reading on these pages about a harmonic balancer. I did a search but not much luck. Exactly what is it and what does it do?? I plan on purchasing an 02 ML500 at the end of July 2007 and wonder whether the 02+ models have one. Would be grateful if someone could educate me.

The HB is nothing more than a pulley, the bottom middle one when looking down at the front of the engine. See http://www.whnet.com/4x4/pix/1120350000.jpg This a top view of it with the serpintene belt on it. There is a rubber insert pushed in the front of it, round like the pulley that dampens engine vibration. As long as you don't see it protruding out the front of the pulley your okay. its a pulley with a plastic outside rim which disintegrates and destorys your radiator and radiator fan and some other stuff LOL. There has been a recall on this harmonic balancer, so check your ML if its included in the recall. Trust me. Check. If youve seen a ML on the freeway which is on fire, it was caused by the harmonic balancer.

I think the recall for the HB was on pre 02 MY.

The 02 ML500 that I had was not part of the recall. I too believe it was for earlier ML's. Check with a dealer to confirm.

The TSB I supplied in the above post indicates the recall was for 1998 thru 2000. My 2 cents.
