Every time I see a 164 or even some of the newer GLs with "4matic" on the back, I wonder what that means. I did a quick search on the forum to see if there was any comparison between the 163 awd system and "4matic" and couldn't find anything. The little research I have done indicates the early "4matic" uses a vicous clutch to engage the front wheels on heavy acceleration or "slippery" conditions, but then revert back to rwd when things went back to normal, but doesn't mention the later M's, only the E-class from the early 90's. Also, it had the ability to manually lock the center and center / rear diff. This is fundamentally different than the 163 awd system. Do the 164's have this basic system or is it like the 163 and they have just given it this name?
