I'm wondering how much longer a US Mercedes SL is than a European with those US bumpers, seems like a good place to sit on when parked.
Length
560SL - 458 cm / 180.31 inches
500SL - 439.0 cm / 172.83 inches

Perception is that the US bumpers add more than just 4 inches at each end of the car. They add a considerable amount of weight too.

Lubricated the soft top frame hinges with white lithium grease and then joined this trend of everybody washing their cars. Since I won’t get the 3M adhesive to glue the hood insulation back on until next week, I will have time for lots of exterior cleaning and waxing.

Picked up a hardtop for my 560. The car is red, my company colors are red and black. I didn't want to mess with the original, so I got a silver in great shape for $400. Debating whether to wrap it in an embossed leather-look vinyl or just paint it black. Carried it home on her white 280SL, actually couldn't believe how good the silver top looked on the white 280. Ida never thunkit.
The car that it was from was parked in a garage during the Great Texas Freeze last winter. Pipes in attic burst, filled the car with sheetrock and insulation. Insurance total.

Post a photo of that silver hard top on white R107.
I am fond of R107s in "two tone" colors.
I found a photo of a gold-tan colored hard top on a red R107 ... I really like that combination.
I have a black hard top on my red 560SL.

Instead of waxing, try a more modern and easier substance - Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax.
I applied it to my light ivory 380SL and it really brought out the shine.
First time application easier than waxing, and subsequent applications even easier - then just spray on an already wet surface, then hose off, then dry.

I was so impressed that I applied it to both my R107s, 3 other cars, and our fiberglass camping trailer.

Are you talking about the 1970's trend of "vinyl tops" when you stated "wrap it in an embossed leather-look vinyl"?
Now that is interesting.
Have not seen that on an R107 hard top.

I once had a 1965 Buick Skylark with the similar chrome strips on the top like our R107s and back then the rage was to only vinylize the flat area on the top. Back then the effect could be vinyl material or sprayed on to create the textured look.
