Today I made the decision to drop some $$$ and buy a replacement front subframe for my 450SL. I'd pulled the original out to weld in replacement gussets, but having cleaned it up and removed all the control arms it became clear that it had been accident damaged at some point, and one of the control arms mounts being completely replaced with some messy welding sometime in the past (kudos to ChiefRider who noticed the welding, I was already concerned about some of the other damage).

The Chief and I then headed out to our local airfield, where there's a bunch of C47s (DC-3s) assembling prior to a flight across the pond to drop paratroops over Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. We toured all the planes, and got to chat to some of the crew. The standard of restoration was incredible... (hope everyone's ok with the OT photos below)
The lead C-47--That's All, Brother--was the lead plane on D-Day. Found in a boneyard and restored last year in Oshkosh, WI (home of EAA). Maiden flight was--I think--in Oct, 2018. I was going past the airport when it took off for the first time in years.

Ordered Euro bumpers & headlights; 2 gauge clusters; glove box insert. Set appt. for new top & carpet. (Actually did all this Friday). Hope to have all installed before the big local car show in August.

I washed mine this evening too. When I was finished I took it for a rip and it ran great.

A slight issue with stalling shortly after startup when it's cold. It idles for a few minutes before the rpms start to flutter/drop and eventually the engine stalls. If I keep the rpms up by putting my foot on the pedal it smooths out when the engine warms up a bit and then it's good to go. No issues starting and once it's warm it runs like a dream. My mechanic thinks it could be the warm up regulator.
Since it was all clean and shiny, I just had to take it for a short cruise around where I live. 30 miles was good enough for today.

Changed oil and filter, serviced trans (fluid/filter change. Still trying to figure out which belt-driven appliance under the hood is whining periodically. Maybe if I gave it some cheese it would stop? Think about it.

The shop that did mine hs been around for over 30 years and the 2nd generation is now running it. Orig owner is still there, but his nephew does a lot of the work. We only have 2 shops that do soft tops in the Milwaukee area, and this place was highly recommended. He actually had to use a grinder to get the glue that the previous installer used off the frame. He said it would have cost less if he hadn't had to do all the grinder work. I still think $800 for the top and $700 for the install was a great price.

Out of curiosity now that you have gutted your interior, how is the Console attached?
I would like to slightly shift the console forward in my 560SL to make a tighter fit against the dash.
Carl--
There are several screws holding the console in.Could be 3 or 5. There are 2 near the top, which fit against the dash and there should be 2 screw holes in the cross piece above the radio (might be below) which should--once you get it mated up--pull the top of the console in so it matches with the dash. The tops of the console sides should match the dash--no ledges, just the crack between the console and the dash should be visible. There is also a screw at the back of the console that holds the console down. This screw is covered by the carpeting. I found 2 screws in the sides of my original console, but don't know what they screwed into.

Took the cover off. Turned the key--nothing except headlights and the ignition buzzer. No click, no fuel pump, no crank. Going to charge the battery and see what that does. I hope a battery charge is all my "Sweet Tomato" needs.

I see a lot of folks here are already into the spring cleaning early, I imagine most of us are worn by the ongoing C19 drama and just anxious to get out / get back on the road :p

As I’m working US hours this week I also capitalized on the opportunity of “free mornings” and spent some quality time with Eleanor cleaning, lubricating, detailing and refreshing all around the engine bay. So far so good, 69k miles and counting. 💪 (y)🚗

Put a new battery in. Found a weird, unused wiring block and a totally corroded positive cable. Also found pine needles and a chunk of burned wood behind the right inner fender. New compressor seized after 1 use and a battery tray that needs replacing. Corrosion on the dead battery had been painted over and the gauge cluster had evidently been out and not replaced properly. First thing is replacing the battery cables and cleaning out the pine needles and dirt. And then.....?
