What have you done for your W210 today/lately?

170994 Views 1256 Replies 229 Participants Last post by  LordRust
This thread was created to elicit quick report of TLC or modification not
necessarily worthy of a thread, but simply an opportunity for us to highlight
something, e.g. wash, new shoes, wiper blade, seat conditioner, etc. So, let's
brag or share, folks. :)

I cleaned out my windshield washer tank because the additives in the wash
corroded my sensor and it was reporting 'low fluid' though the tank was full.
A little tooth brushing and flossing did the trick. Natch I've switched to different
fluid. (stay away from RainX orange)

youre scaring me. I have to do this job also. is there a particular youtube video or URL link you could recommend to make this job a little easier. I see the "walter mitty" 5 quick you tube vids that take apart most of the sunroof but would like to know if anything else you suggest. thanks.
I followed the 5 quick videos too...watched them over and over. It's a very rewarding job once complete!!
Advice:
1- take your time - beer is your friend here
2- after you remove the glass and front and rear panels/pieces....do one side at a time. This way you can use the other side as a guide to help you.
3- you should 'see' the issue that caused the cable to pop out...it's snap-on plastic piece with one screw. Problem is, it needs 2 screws so drill another hole and find a shallow screw to secure the plastic back on the car. This should prevent any future issues
4- once you are finished with the cables, slide the sunroof tracks forward toward the motor manually. There is a gap (cutout) in the track where the rear (white in color) guide should rest. Do both sides the same. Plug in wires to motor and then mount the motor. If you have done it correctly (without the glass mounted) press the 'up' or 'tilt' sunroof button and the rails will lift upward. This also synchs the button to the cables. If this goes well, then mount the glass back to the rails leaving the screws fairly loose. Lower the sunroof and adjust the glass to match your roof using the six screws you just did and that is it.
4.5 Once more thing...when reinstalling the rear rain drain...its rubber and mounts to the rails...when removing you must pry this out and this is shown in the video. However, when reinstalling it just lays on the rear and the male sides go the hole on each side of the rail. There is no snapping or mounting...it just lays there. This caused me a lot of time trying to figure out how to snap this in place. i cannot explain why it snaps out and doesn't snap in.
5- Good luck and shoot me any questions.

thanks tarheel. I will probably work on this in a month or two. My headliner is also drooping and I ordered a new headliner which just arrived. taking that out should be fun as well. the single screw cable cover that was updated to a two screw cover is no longer made but I found NOS ones on ebay and those as well as new OEM cables are coming too. I have a special mercedes lube for the sunroof rails but wanted to ask you is there a lube for the cables themselves or not? I have spray lithium and I have spray teflon lubes on hand.
sunroof, headliner and the door speakers you installed also. I'm copying you.

I have to do my headliner. '99 is a one off year for headliners so hard to find at the JY. Have not opened my sunroof yet in my new to me car. Don't want to risk sunroof jamming open while weather is still cold.

thats where I got my headliner socalsam. I haven't opened the box yet so have no further comment. it is supposedly the correct 1/8" thick material so that the sunroof shade works properly

Thanks for tip. Previous, previous owner attempted to re-glue but botched the job, there is a large dark spot on the fabric. New is going to be too pricey for mine. I'm thinking JY headliner which will be under $30 but will need droop repaired.

I'm thinking about taking the headliner to have it re-covered. Foam gets scraped off and new foam backed fabric is applied. Probably looking at $150-200 for the job.
Well my materials only cost $300 so that would be a great deal. Plus it would probably be done properly.

Headliner will get done but it is low on my list right now. I still have motor and trans mounts and some oil leaks.
ah for sure mechanical before cosmetic. I'm lucky, my mom bought my car new in 1998 and its only got 37000 miles so mechanically its pretty sound. more of a cosmetic renovation than a mechanical overhaul for my E320.

37k! Mine has 174k and has about a decade of deferred maintenance.
174 is still young for a w210. mine also had deferred maintenance but more time than miles. sat in a garage for about 5 years. I really like the car and it is now my daily driver. my other car is currently undergoing deferred maintenance in the garage while I enjoy the benz LOL

i would not lube the cables as this would attract dirt. You'll understand once you view the new cables. I didn't lube anything and it works fine. I also need a new headliner, but that is for another day.

I finally decided to fix the thump, thump, thump sound coming from the driveshaft tunnel. I replaced the driveshaft carrier bearing today. It went better than expected, it took less beer and cussing than I had anticipated.

Took it on a tour to San Francisco's salesforce park.

I wanted to see that because it is actually a park 5 acres suspended about 100 feet off the ground.

it takes care of all the workers in the financial district. It is a place to relax and yoga classes!

as usual the E430 performed flawlessly

Installed transmission mount. Was ready to do engine mounts but they looked OK. I'll leave them for now and see how she drives.

It was a spectacular day! That salesforce park is interesting - open last year, it cost over $2 billion. And it is in the air - about 100' off the ground - 5 acres in the financial district.

I never had any symptoms on three of my W210s when the motor mounts collapsed. Check the clearance on your bottom radiator hose and chassis.
