More tinkering today. Replaced a/c compressor. First time in a Merc so it took a lot longer than it should have. I think I have a vacuum pump somewhere but may have to get one from Harbor. Also need gages. Next up is to replace receiver drier and then pull a vacuum. While the plastic under trays were off, replaced a missing threaded insert and screw. Also replaced two other screws with OEM. Trays are firmly attached now. Did a shade tree alignment to try to get steering wheel straight when going straight. Yes, yes, not supposed to do that but this bugged me enough to consider a shop alignment. Also checked and re-attached transmission ground. While everything was apart, looked for an oil leak at the front of the engine. Suspect it is combination of oil filter housing and old compressor. Spent a fair amount of time cleaning off oil muck.

Check your engine oil pressure test port cover above the tensioner.

Small projects: changed out the cigarette lighter plug for a dual USB and USB-C charger port with voltmeter. Added custom w210 phone dash mount with wireless mag mount charger. Unfortunately they sent the wrong charger the one for a windshield not for the dash mount. Have emailed them for the correct part. No parts of the cars wiring harness was cut for this. Everything is plug in. Made a small harness that plugged into the cigarette lighter connector. The mag lock charger has to plug into 12v cigarette plug so hard wired one in and hid it behind the dash. Little Mercedes stickers make it look correct 👀 Had to dremel out the hole where the cigarette lighter socket used to live to fit the usb plug. Stereo upgrade write up later.

Project 2: had to fix the seat belt receptor. Plastic cover broken off and warped. I used the heat gun to soften and reshap it square then Epoxied it on. I also repainted the red buttons they were an ugly milky pink due to sun and age. Satin apple red was a perfect match to the unfaded red plastic under the cover.

Disconnected battery and replaced steering wheel with better condition one. Then replaced A/C receiver drier. Had to horse around washer bottles to access mounting bolts and A/C lines. Spilled some washer fluid around the engine bay. Finished and then started the car. It cranked, ran a little, and then sputtered out. Don't know if spillage and fuel pressure issue are related. More likely coincidence as car is old. Will deal with fuel pressure issue tomorrow.

I changed the two CR2025 batteries in my key fob. Now instead of having to stand right next to the car I can lock & unlock from three car lengths or more away. Lol. Not sure why this makes me so happy. 🤔

Very minor tinkering today. Took out bypass serpentine belt and installed regular belt to see how bearings on my new to me a/c compressor sound. So far so good. Next up will be pulling a vacuum to test for leaks.

Hello everyone,
I’m not sure where to post this but I recently bought a 2001 e55 amg to learn how to work on cars and also because I love old mercedes. I have a bit of a atf line leak but can’t find any similar issue and or solutions anywhere. For some reason the line won’t sit flush against the opening and I can’t tighten anymore otherwise I’m afraid I might break something. Thank you in advance and I look forward to being a part of this community :)

Take off the hose and see if you can thread in the banjo bolt all the way in by hand. If you can't, threads have been possibly damaged.

Why are you working on this area? Front accident?

I re-attached the lower pocket onto the driver's door using... thumbtacks.

I now regret not taking photos of this fix, which would have made a decent How-To.

The plastic studs that attach the door pocket to the door card embrittle and crack over time (yay, Daimler-Chrysler era cost cutting). The flanges on the studs all had broken off and were stuck to the door insulation. With no flanges, there was nothing to retain the pocket when it was attached to the door, and the pocket would just fall off the door when I slammed the door shut. Imagine my joy when later I would open my car door and the pocket would drop to the pavement, suspended only by the wires for the light that illuminates the ground under the door.

So here's how you fix it.

Go to your local office supply store and pick up a package of old school chome-metal thumbtacks.

With the door panel removed and the pocket in place and with the studs fitted in their holes, press a thumbtack down into the middle of each stud. I bent multiple thumbtacks doing this, but eventually got them to go in straight. Light taps with a hammer worked well. I was able to do it without cracking any of the studs.

The pocket hasn't fallen off the door since. Fingers crossed.

Last week i replaced the 2 sunroof cables to finally get the sunroof working again. Wow, what a job. I'm a decent DIY person and it still took me around 4 hours. i took my time and love the results.

Also, installed chrome rings around the cluster gauges. Well, they are plastic, but look great. I'll try to get some pics up.

youre scaring me. I have to do this job also. is there a particular youtube video or URL link you could recommend to make this job a little easier. I see the "walter mitty" 5 quick you tube vids that take apart most of the sunroof but would like to know if anything else you suggest. thanks.
