Had a pleasant surprise this evening. Discovered that the CD cartridges for my 1996 R129 are the same as that for the 2000 W210.

Last year resealed breather covers and got new motor mounts.
Last month changed oil with Mobil 1 0W40, Mann fleece filter and Mann air filter.
This week replaced the blower motor resistor, charcoal filters and cabin air filters.
This weekend I'm polishing the headlights.
Man I love this car:smile
I really like mine, too. I wish my SL handled like this car.

Continuing Maintenance on our 2002 E320:

Replaced both sets of cabin air filters. Parts came from genuinemercedesparts.com which is an online parts service provided by RBM, a major dealer in metro Atlanta. I have gotten good service from them on several occasions. With their discount, cost of many OE parts is less than from other sources. They use FEDEX home delivery. Typical turn around is 5 working days from online order entry until the FEDEX box is at my front door.

Cabin dust filters, MBZ 210-830-10-18 ($33.25 plus tax) part number is for a set of 2 filters...
When I changed my dust filters (first time in the car since new! Changed last year - I got the feeling that the location was an afterthought. Having to pry out the glove box lining seems a bit above and beyond. In my R129 it is an enclosure in front of the firewall. Right over the blower motor.

"Hey Fritz! Ya know we have to have a cabin filter on this car? Where do we put it?"

Just renewed the insurance on mine ;-) Have tried going all the way on FSS; so far over 12,000 miles and another 1,000 to go. oil isn't even really black. About 1/2 liter consumed in total. Never drove a car 13,000 miles without an oil change before.

I am planning on a cross country trip in the next week - will put 5,000-9,000 miles on in a few weeks. While my idler pulley bearing was fine at 100,000 miles (and original since new) I thought it might be smart to preemptively change it.

Imagine that going on the road - with towing, motels, finding a shop...

Anyway when I got the car I had changed the belt and had ordered the 2 tools you need to remove the fan blades.

In the interim some time ago I had apparently thrown out the 36mm wrench at some point.

Because, you know, I had to wonder "who needs a 36mm open end wrench?"

Well, I did apparently.

Ordered another from Amazon (thanks Prime and 1 day delivery).

Got the new one on.

Old one seemed fine but my shop friend said with those plastic housings they can be good one day - gone the next.

Did not want it going 2,000 miles from home.

Did you drive the E430? How many miles on it? Any problems? Oil consumption?
Yes - drove it. 110,000 miles on it now. No evidence of any oil consumption during that trip. Had the CEL go on and fortunately I brought my OBD II reader. Loose gas cap. I reset it (imagine being on a trip and having that CEL hang over you?)

Managed to break a plastic bulb holder tryijnkg to get it off (one headlight went out; replaced it with Sylvania SilverStars and the difference was amazing). Then I stupidly wanted to replace the other bulbs (moral - on a trip if it isn't broke don't fix it).

Got the new holder at the dealer. Don't know if I have to splice a wire or it will all plug in so I will let my shop friend deal with it.

Was very happy with the car's performance. got 24-27 mpg.

There’s a lot of nice sections of Route 66 you can see down there too. You have to drive off interstate 40 to catch them

Came out this morning and saw a long trail of fluid coming from my E430. After a moment's scare, saw that it was blue and probably the Windshield Washer container.

Got 2 of those rubber grommets at the dealer thinking there were 2 pumps - got confused with the SL - and there was only 1. Anyone need one?

Funny how those things are fine one day and then let lose the next - to the point most of the gallon of coolant was gone.

Waxed my E430 - I like the wax from Griot's Garage with my Porter-Cable buffer. I keep making the mistake of putting it on too heavy which makes removal fun.

Well today I’m driving out and the check engine light goes on.

And I thought the designers are very clever because they have the low fuel light in front of your flashing to direct your attention to that little check engine light off to the right.

I carry a little OBD-2 reader with me and it said large evaporative leak.

I had forgotten to put the gas cap on

Yesterday I ordered a weather tech trunk liner for the E430.
They are a molded plastic custom-made for each model.
The only color available was black, I guess since the model is so old. But it just so happens that my trunk lining is black so it will look pretty sharp.

we had a little towel under the trunk to keep it clean for 20 years.

Well here’s a good one.
My remote for the E430 was getting less and less range so I thought I would replace the battery

It takes a 2025.

I go to the Walgreens drugstore and pay $8.00 for one

Well something like $7.60.

I notice my 1996 SL 500 uses the same batteries and that is a different security design so you almost have to be on top of the car and pointing at the mirror to open or close it.

found out it takes 2 2025 batteries.

So just for fun I checked Amazon and being on prime just about it everything is free shipping which is pretty amazing

4 of the identical Everready lithium batteries are $5.32.

I just ordered it for July 22 delivery

CR2025: my local Home Depot had a 10 pack for $12. fortunately I have other devices which utilize
this size (bike computers, Nissan FOB, etc)
These were lithium but still $12 for 10 is a great deal!

$8 for 1 is not ;-) No more Walgreens for me (at least for batteries)

Despite owning this car in the family for 20 years, just discovered something new about it - how to operate the rear foglight. When I got the car from my late father, discovered the super-secret first aid kit on the secret compartment of the rear armrest...

My family bought his car new and I didn’t even know about this when I got it. When I changed it two years ago they were filthy.

I’ll bet they hadn’t been changed in at least 10 years.

and I thought today how simple they designed this car for maintenance. Like changing the mass airflow sensor or the oil-but what’s going on with the cabin air filter?

It’s like a super secret location.

where I found since then a good tool to help you pull that glove box out is one of those plastic trim separators you get at Harbor freight.

Kent Bergsma at Mercedes source on YouTube gives a good tutorial on this

there’s two little tabs on each end of the plastic glove box you’ve got to push the top down just a bit to get them out

push down towards the right side - yank it out and then the left side comes out easily

Well to tell you how much dull my life has been lately with all this virus crap and unable to travel, here is what I’ve been excitedly waiting for.

It’s the first time with this car I’ve actually let the FSS go the whole mile and tell me when to change the oil.

For most of the car‘s life between my mother and father they drove it maybe 3000 to 5000 miles a year.

I still think should be done once a year regardless of mileage

I’ve been driving that thing.

I went through the Southwest and Texas about six months ago

so anyway there’s about 13,600 miles on the oil – mobil 1 15W-40- and now 100 miles to go before the FSS says to change the oil.

I just want to see if it’s those red bulbs come on when you go over the recommended.

they have to be used for something 😁

anyway I’ll be using my topsider and changing the oil and filter probably Tuesday.

I use the same oil in my 1996SL 500 and change it per the old 7500 mile recommendation

I know with today’s oil that’s pretty silly but it is still a paper filter

anyway I get to see the FSS tell me to change the oil.

Woo Hoo

Just changed the coolant today. Spent most of my time just undoing those underside panels just to get to the drain plug

I just filled it to the brim and then let the pressurize system figure out the right level and bleed off the excess

I think the proper level is about halfway up the reservoir but I’m not sure

this engine uses hardly any oil and then I noticed when I took the covers off the oil pan had oil on the bottom so I suspect what it does use it leaks
