I was wondering what 4" speakers fit under the grill in the dash ? I do not want to mount a seperate tweeter on the dash or window pillar.

I believe in an earlier thread Boston Acoustics FX-4 was mentioned. MB Quart Discus 4" coaxials should work as well, but they are "low end" for the brnad.

Will 4" x 6" "plate" speakers fit ?

The issue is the tweeter sticking up too far and hitting the grill for many/most 4" coaxial speakers.

Alan

BTW, just installed a Nakimichi TD-400 radio/cassette NIB (New in Box). Top end unit from the mid-1980s :) Another "Time Warp" item !

If I remember right, I used Pioneer TS-G1340R 5-1/4" 2-way speakers I bought at Best Buy. They fit with no modifications, just had to change the wiring connector. There is no way a 4x6 will fit in there.

i go with pioneer as well--

i got mine at wal mart for 40 bux and change, this was before i knew the spot was weird(or not "normal") and after i put them in in like 30 minutes, my radio sounded well--

pathetic.

ohh the joys of a clanky diesel with tiny little speakers in the front and nothing but an echo behind. atleast they put in air conditioning! naa, they sound ok, my car just has no rear speakers(or fader, or tape, or stereo)

it does have an ipod, however. so i have arguably the best sattelite speakers for my ipod available! too bad they weigh 3400 pounds, huh? oh well-- theyre mobile!

I went with "Sony XS-W4021 4" 120 Watts 2-Way Speakers" They were an easy install and also fit under the grills. I think they sound excellent.
EDIT: $29.95 + shipping @ http://www.etronics.com

» frequency response 45-22,000 Hz

I used Pioneer 1040R 3.5" speakers up front and
they sound O.K. to me.
I used some Polk MoMo 5.5" in the back with a little
trim to the hat rack cardboard.

I'd like to know what you think of the TD-400, I looked at those because I liked the non flashey
look, but to much $$$ for me.

I just replaced the speakers in my 83 300D. I used 5 1/4 in the rear and used the new grills that came with the speakers, looks much nicer. I used Pioneer 4" in the front. Now I trimed the metal on the speakers so they would fit in, and I could only mount them with 2 screws, but they are secure, don't rattle, and the factory covers fit back on real nice.

Check my reply to the "cutting speaker holes" thread so you can see my set-up because I think I have got good sound out of my benz, it's quite balanced too and probably the easiest way to get good sound quality without making any door-card mods

P>S> I used Sony customs to fit under the dash, the 10cm ones give good sound but is appaling for the low-end, hence my 6x9's and sub

> What do I think of my Nakimichi TD-400 ?

A GREAT unit (eBay has refurb TD-400s for $160). About $500+ list in mid-1980s (= to $1,000 today). I just use tuner but that is a suberb unit as well. Needs as amp as well.

I am getting MB Quart speakers to match. 5 1/4" rear & 4" front.

Lanzar Speakers

Does anyone have experience with the Lanzar VX40S. These have a very shallow mounting depth (1.2 inches compared with 1.69 inches for the Sony W4021). Price is about the same but I have never heard of Lanzar.
