Had to temporarily replace a fractured rubber elbow - did not seem to make much difference - perhaps a slightly higher cold start idle.

Anybody know what this thing does?

It's called the "vacuum pump". I believe it is used to maintain vacuum on the brake booster even then the engine is not running (thus there would be no vacuum available from the intake manifold). I don't believe this is used on US models.

Thanks Rodney, I'll see if it sucks air - it might be the reason that I'm getting good mileage!!!! - if so I'll disconnect it and fit a little air filter!!!!

Actually, I am wrong - this is also on US models. My C240 has it, I guess I just never noticed it.
