Went to the dealership on Saturday morning. Then went to do a smog test. It failed for whatever the dealer did while it's in the shop. O2, Cat, EGR and 2nd air system "incomplete". Smog guy told me to drive around then go back to retest. Dealer said to drive at least 80 miles.

So far, I'v driven 200 miles in numerous trips, 25 + 25 + 16 + 16 + 80 and misc. short trips. The system is still incomplete.

Now, it makes me wonder whether it will be ready before it's due (next weekend).

What does it take to get it ready (ok) anyway?

Did you try a search?

I recently posted the "drive cycle" test and if everything is working properly, running the cycle (sometimes recommended twice) will ensure that the systems are set to ready.

I'll see if I have time to try and find it when I'm not on the smartphone but a search should work.

Thanks for coming to the rescue.

Haven't read it yet, will give it a try. Hope it will be ready by Friday.

DMV only gives 30 days notice now. It created some problem for me. (out of town, multiple car issues...etc.)

What this document says is that driving freeway miles does not help. Drive lots of surface street miles to get them ready. Indeed, this morning, driving on surface street to work (11 miles) cleared one item, i.e., Oxygen sensor. Three more to go.

Almost all

states allow 2 not ready in the i/m status check.
The cats and the secondary air pump are usually the last to go ready.
Drive without the a/c on for a few hours.
When the car is cool in the morning start it up and just let it idle for 20 minutes, shut it off and repeat.
Get out your obd2 monitor and read but don't erase the i/m readiness status.
Some Bozo at the dealer either cleared a cel code (thus setting the i/m to not ready) or disconnected the battery which did the same

Two down two to go. Cat and Evap.

Lessons learned: Instead of taking the risk of failing the smog test first time, always get the OBD2 out and check I/M status before going to the smog test station. Drive surface street miles to help it to get ready.

Thanks. Thanks.

Similiar thing happend to me a couple of years ago. I drove it for 100 or so miles and took it back and it passed. I don't remember why I had the problem. New battery maybe. At least they didn't charge me to retest.
