headlights project: Installed HID 5k low beam & 3k for the Fog lights all installed in a newer headlight assemblies as my originals were already getting “milky” from the oxide… it was not a clinical install for the ballast and outside cables as the rain came on me but it was a rather functional installation

I never touched my bumper and instead removed the black plastic inner wheelwell. This also gave me full access to the light assembly and ballast installation.

How many steps in removing the lower bumper shin ?..and did any problems come up ?

Well I find out that whoever worked in this car before really butchered the whole bumper and splash guard securement bits… a lot of self tap Robertson screws were used and few were missing altogether… I am actually surprised the whole unit has stayed up so I found a future project… I needed to take off the bumper as I needed access to the front underneath bolt to exchange the headlights assemblies plus I was installing another set of ballast for the fog.

Whilst you're working on this, I would consider fixing the compensating resistors to the bare metal, or at least not tied to an existing wiring loom - these get rather hot.

I used encapsulated resistors for lower (dipped) beam LEDs, as they were part of the kit, but for fogs and others I put together a few compensating harnesses with 'naked' resistors myself, and fixed them the slam panel for fogs, and the engine bay frame for turn indicators:

Dual function LED Fog / DRL resistor:

Well today I tackled the headliner and pillar covers as they were stained and soiled… I went with a dark grey but the coverage for headliner was running low so I decided go with black… it made the cabin much darker but the stains were driving me crazy! (The Sun showed more streaky) it’s not a perfect job but hood enough

On July 8 my wife, one daughter and I were leaving Whistler after a four day conference and headed to Penticton for the Okanagan Granfondo, and in heavy traffic in Squamish, the exhaust clamp fell off. At first I thought the racket was from a VW ahead of me in the traffic jam, but nope. This was a Friday afternoon. I don't know which of you have replaced the clamp between the catalyst and rest of the exhaust, but I have one time and it's a bear of a job and requires lots of tools and a lot of effort. Phone lines were malfunctioning due to the Rogers fiasco so we just drove very noisily the 60 km to Mercedes-Benz North Vancouver, dropping our daughter off at Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal on the way. At the dealer, I asked the parts guy if they had the clamp and donut gasket in stock and they did, so I bought them.

With a 430 km drive ahead of us that afternoon, I asked a service guy named Gregory if he could have a tech replace the clamp ASAP and he said although they were down two technicians and fully booked, he'd see what he could do. The car was in the shop 15 minutes later....During the job he said the old parts were still on the pipe and seemingly undamaged, so did I want to return the new parts and have the old ones reinstalled? I told him to put the new ones on and save the old ones as spares, to be carried in the spare tire well....One hour later we were on the road again with the new clamp installed. That is excellent service, I have to say, and super honest.

The rest of the trip was fine and the Granfondo of only 153 km (it was formerly 160 km) on July 10th was also great, though difficult because I was likely fighting Covid-19 off - my daughter came down with symptoms Sunday and tested positive and my wife as well a couple of days later. My tests have all been negative but I've had mild symptoms all week.

In any case, the car's over 327,000 km now. Probably I will have to get the front brakes done soon and eventually the other CV joint, but still going strong and not drinking any oil at all in the 19,550 km oil change intervals.

That is quite the story, thanks for sharing … at 327k KMs and 19k+ intervals, Do you own it since new? I bought mine recently with 214k on the motor but I don’t trust the kind of care the past owner had so I am planning my intervals every 8k kms for a year and then asses the health level and maybe bump the intervals as recommended … so far I have being able to do most repairs myself but to know a honest shop around town when needed is really good

Rear panel door handle is "weak part" as door is too heavy and by time handle parts broke or opening electric switch button goes wrong, not to mention chrome surface which peels off by time, winter salt and car washing. This is my third handle. Always take new handle as you will got problem too soon. Tip: with handle change and 4 mounting dowels for proper and tight securing.
