This is a picture of a Gwagen used in the British equivalent of the USMLM to monitor activity in the Soviet block back in the "good old days" of the cold war. When I was in the US Air Force I worked in the same agency as the US MLM and had the opportunity to spend some time wth these guys but I don't recall seeing a Gwagen.

But to the question at hand - what are the bumps (rivets) around the windows on this Gwagen? Reinforcing glass? 4x4 rancher will probably be the guy to answer this.

They're used to attach wire mesh panels over the glass, like for protection from people launching bricks at you. - riot patrol. That stuff is actually in the EPC, along with cool stuff like machine gun and tow missle pedestals for the open G's.

ALASKA: The vehicle pictured is one I own, a good number of Gs were used by BRIXMIS in the 80s 280LWB and 230swb this one was a late issue 1988 only a few years before the whole Sov structure fell apart. it went on to KOSOVO where it was part of the UNMIC force and GST KOSOVO where it gained a few extra bits, the infra red light on the roof and machine pistol lockers in the front doors, which are also a mercedes part.
I had two postings to BRIXMIS, the early days mid to late 60s when we used Opels converted to 4 wd by Ferguson FF of Coventry England and later 80s when at first Rangerovers were tried to be quickly replaced by G Wagens, see the web site www.brixmis.co.uk for more info, where you will find that the USMML was the equivelant of BRIXMIS which had more agents on the ground than the US & French together being the nation to negotiate and establish the original agreement.

Great stuff. It was certainly an interesting mission which generated a lot of good intel and plenty of amazing stories. I had no idea the BRIXMIS was such a large force. Typical British understated approach to things?

Your G-wagen is a rolling museum - is the boy yours too?

Thanks for the compliment.
Yes he is, he is a late addition to my life and keeps a spring in my step as I am no longer a spring chicken.
He came with me to collect the G from Germany it was one of his proudest moments. You may remember these Soviet tac lights that we nicked frequently because they helped diguise our vehicles as one of theirs.

OK! I am a believer now. I recall a US serviceman in the mid 90's in Germany purchased a used military opel and it turns out it was a former USMLM vehicle which had never been properly decomissioned and still had all the antenae etc still installed. Quite a stink from that slight oversight!

Hey I remember those lights. I never tried to steal one though - the bolts were always rusty and my best opportunity was out in Siberia and it was too darn cold to take my mittens off! Out there the mechanics would build fires in tubs of used motor oil and set them under the engines of the trucks to warm them up. A bit smelly and occassionally exciting but effective.

Well, tell that boy of yours he might take over part of your fleet if his love of G-wagens continues. My 12 year old daughter asked me if I would help her get a G-wagen when she graduates from high school. I offered her her mom's SAAB but she really wants a G-wagen.
