How much hp has someone pushed on the om648 engine that comes in the e320 cdi before blowing up ?
What are the mods I need to do to get to 350 400 whp ?

Turbo upgrade ?
Tune ?
Bigger fuel pump ?
Hone the injectors ?
Catless downpipe ?

Not sure how much people have gotten in terms of HP but that would likely be something that's been tested in Eastern Europe where they love the MB diesels and especially the 648. Bear in mind the further you deviate from stock the more likely you are to destroy the engine or at the very least shorten its life.

All of the things you've listed are available but you'd have to speak with the tune suppliers for specifications. There are some people on utube who have done much of this. Don't actually know about honing injectors, is that actually a thing?

What's the motivation for getting to over 350? It's not like it's can't push in stock form, I'm always amazed at the how well it performs in stock form with 201.

EDIT: RC (Rocketchip) claims with just the stage 2 tune an increase in 35 PS and 76 NM torque. And that's with no change in hardware at all. IDK what you could get from Malone or others, I do know that the company that provided tunes to the utuber with the CDI charges $1000 for every one of their tune options for the E320.

thanks for the feedback.
Who is this rocketchip - is he a tuner or a member?

I always thought stage 2 tune go with "beginner" hardware mods like down- & straightpipes, intercoolers, egr-deletes..
And stage 3 with advanced mods like turbo / injectors / fuel pumps..

Isnt this the case?

That engine seems tough enough to be an agricultural engine, too. I wouldn't be surprised if someone were using it as such. I find 201 HP and 369 lb-ft quite sufficient, personally.

The next question would be, how much torque can the transmission take?
It actually is used as a boat engine a lot here lol
I am always amazed by how much the trans seems to be able to digest according to experiences from utubers.
in pure stock trim its capable of 580nm / 430 lbft according to WIS, its even written in its name when you make a TCU read out if i am not mistaken.
A not so wear intesive programmed soft/slow clutch engangement can rise transmittable torque without reducing life at the cost of comfort to a certain extend.
Furthermore you can add tougher soleniods & shift packs to bring applicable internal system pressure to a higher level as well as V8 CDI converters and supposedly bring capability towards or beyond amg 55 compressor level.

nontheless, i am interested in what people achieve engine wise and with what kind of measures..

If anyone knows a member / thread he could point me to, i would be thankful

registered there now. cant post or pm, its sad.. dont know how to contact anyone there

All 'stage 2' from the suppliers I know are basic tunes, no hardware mods unless requested specifically, like EGR delete etc. Both Rocketchip and Malone are big in the VW TDI groups, I have tunes by both of these makers and will be getting another from one of them this summer for another TDI project.

Rocketchip is here and Malone is here. I've found Jeff at Rocketchip is better to call, he's almost non-responsive to emails. RC does publish their basic (stage 2) performance improvements on the website though, that's where I got the figures from.

Yes, I think Sixto is right, maybe Superturbodiesel is really what you're looking for?

I think many of the Benz diesel engines are used in a variety of platforms. The OM642 was available in the W211/W212/W221 cars while a variant was available in the 08 and up Sprinter vans. The OM647 from the E270 CDI was available in the early Sprinters in a variant that was very much liked by owners.

The same utuber i mentioned before has also done some basic trans valve body work to help the 722.6 with shifting etc. Otherwise I am not sure what can be done other than a professional rebuild that would include performance mods to support the greater torque of the tuned engine. That utuber also had a tune to improve the trans performance as well. He has a lot of vids, you won't have trouble finding his stuff. I think it's a popular channel and the topic seems to be popular.

Thanks for the links!

After researching a lot i FINALLY found an apparently well know and at least serious appearing tuner who specialises in OM648.. or at least offers tuning guides:

220-270hp build:
OM648 220-270hp

--> only with software. I guess 270hp needs everything in perfect condition. air filter, turbo, intake, egr, exhaust...
carbon build up free intake system etc.. and maybe down- & straigh pipe exhaust system?

300-400hp build:
OM648 / OM613 300-400hp

Long story short, for 300 hp build looks like that:
  • Intercooler is too small --> Needs to be upgraded to at least 550x140x60, then its good for 400hp. 550x230x60 fits too, there are bolt on kits with that size.. will go that size
  • turbo needs to be upgraded --> according to superturbodiesel guys the cnc replacement of stock wheel will deliver 300 hp since its more efficient.. will probably do that too, Here it is: Billet Turbo Compressor Wheel Garrett GT2359V (44.47/59.4 mm) TOYOTA 17201-17050 | eBay
  • stock 648 injectors are good to 300hp
  • stock 648 fuel pump is good to 350hp

Then there are things rather for 400hp builds:
  • bigger injectors (c30 cdi, custom.. etc)
  • bigger turbo (bigger compressor or both bigger compressor & turbine)
  • stock 400 cdi fuel pump - good up to 450 hp
  • 4bar map sensor

And optional stuff:
  • billet fuel pump coupling
  • arp rod bolts
  • camshaft

The OM648 can make 600hp/650tq quite easily. To be in the 300hp range requires nothing but slight mods and a controller from Baldur. The beauty of this engine is longevity and early torque development. I'd much prefer 270 hp with 450/500 ft lbs under 2500rpms. Gear appropriately and enjoy outstanding mileage for any engine making those kind of numbers.

do you know any build threads? i am very interested.

Whats a controller from baldur?

So far i did the following:
  • optimized the air box intake (cutting out obstacles in the grill area)
  • replaced the filter with a k&n filter
  • deleted the turbo silencer by taking the inlet out
  • installed a 550x230x65 intercooler
  • heat wrapped the metall pipe to intake
  • deleted the big round intake pipe silencer / blocked off
  • deleted the egr (by cutting out the egr inlet angled pipe = clean hollow pipe now - blocking off the valve and blocking the mix pipe inlet with a plate and installing a egr simulator)
  • cleaned the intake from all ashes and oil remains
  • 3" turbo downpipe and heatwrapped it = cat delete / straight pipe (Euro3 engine, no DPF and no swirl flaps to begin with)
  • muffler delete (straight pipes)
  • sonic bathed the injectors 10x times
i am still installing other things like park monitor, repairing door locks etc.. will be fun to take it out for the first spin afterwards

If you go to the LegitStreetCars youtube channel you can see how Alex pushed his to the limit (with the help of tuner Marcin Hoski).

I got a Stage 1 tune on both of mine (plus a tuned TCU on one) and am perfectly happy with them.

Marcin Hoski did my tunes....according to him HP increase is 30-50 depending on condition of vehicle, with commensurate increase in torque.

After making 400+ hp. I would have to say, Amir is the best tuner out there for what he is. He went above and beyond and also explained to me how tuning works and whats he doing everytime he changes parameters. He is a actual tuner to go ahead and make a file from scratch and not copy paste all data from a different tuner.

Wow...you're making 400+ HP from your OM648? That's...well, that's pretty darn impressive. You're now in turbodiesel pickup truck territory if you're doing that.

What kind of tranny mods did you make to take all the torque from an engine so enhanced?
