i pulled into my garage last night and realized i had to move the car up a few inches. i tried to turn the car on and it wouldnt start.
3 times i tried this, and it wouldnt start. all the lights went on but the engine did not fire up....what the heck

then i put the gear in D, and tried and it started.

now usually if i forget to put the car in P, and leave it in D, it wont start , but this was the opposite

any ideas what happened?

Not sure but possibly the neutral safety switch.

Are your shifter bushings bad?
Does the shifter not have a rigid feel to it when moving it?
These can cause mis alignment of the shifting into park drive and or reverse.

And easy to replace.
