I have a 1986 300sdl. I am going to change the filters this weekend; air, fuel, PS and oil. Any thing I should know (i.e. tools, nonos) before starting; I do have the disc from MBUSA.

One other question, the rear vent only shoots cold air, any ideas?

I never did anything more than air filter changes. Everything else was done by the mechanic. I had no trouble changing the large air filter. I bought a Purolator Premium Plus (#A63327) large circular air filter for $12.00 and put it in. No problem. But the small rectangular filter gave me problems. It is called the secondary air filter, I believe. First I couldn't remove the screws. Trying to remove the screws I partially damaged the head. Then after removing I put the new one, a Mann filter bought online for $8.00. When I tried to screw the screws in, they will not go all the way in. Now they are projecting a little out. But so far nothing has happened. Watch out for problems with the secondary air filter.

Use OEM filters and CH – 4 rated oil for diesels or synthetic. Standard tools will do. Only cold air is supposed to blow out of the rear vents.

I believe the rear vent that comes out between the front seats only blows outside air and it is not heated. All you can do is close it off it you don't want cool air blowing all the time.[:)]

I have weekend work, too, if it warms up on Sunday. I’m going to change the oil and filter on the 300 SE. I did the 500 SEL last weekend. Of the three engines I’ve worked on, M117, M103, and the OM617, the M117 is easiest to do an oil change.

Have you ever replaced the fuel filters before?

It is handy if you have some clean deisel to fill the main filter with before fitting. It is not essential, but it takes the engine alot of cranking to bleed if you start with a dry filter.

Have you bought the little pre filter aswell?

When I changed my filters I had plenty of SPILLED diesel…[:0]

Make sure you’ve got large containers or pans to put under the engine – wiping up spilled diesel fuel is not fun.

my 260 SE blows warm air in the rear, just for information.

I've disconected the vacume valve that adjusts the teprature, but that shouldn't make a diference.

at the time of my response (2/15/02 1:10 PM), the Tampa, FL temperature bar in your signature was indicating 64F. That seems warm enough to me - I wish if it were that warm here (NY).

My rear vent was blowing hot air today with the main control set to feet, both thermostats turned up and the fan blowing on 3.

Either your European market system is different or you’ve turned the interior of your car into a furnace and you’re recycling super hot air through the vents. [:0]
