My friend has a 1985 190E 4 cyl with a rebuilt engine including new head gasket 3 years ago.He is having to add 1 gallon of water pretty often over the last month. There doesn't seem to be any leaks though. He thought maybe a leaking head gasket, but there is no white smoke coming out the exhaust. Are there any 190 experts out there with some advice on where to start? The water pump seems to be ok.Last weekend steam came out of the radiator.any suggestions would be appreciated

Sounds like a head gasket to me. Some people have used different additives that seal leaks but only sometimes worked. At your rate of useage I would remove the head. Be sure to have the head surfaced (milled flat) by a machine shop. I bought a 190 2.3 cheap that the PO had replaced the gasket but didn't surface the head and it still leaked. I had the head surfaced and haven't had a problem with it for 2 years now.
